General Podsu, commanding the center, has 60 battalions, six squadrons and 198 guns, or 65,000 men. General Oku, commanding the left, including General Nogl'a forces, has 9$ battalions, 23 squadrons and 342 guns, or 110,000 men. The num ber of reservists with Generals Nod- zu and Oku Is unknown. The total of Field Marsha Oyamn's regular troops is placed at 265,000 cavalry and In funtry and 850 guns. The total num ber of reservists is probably 100,000. Military men estimate Genernl Kuro patkln's superiority at about 50,000 men, without Including the 16th army corps, which Is not yet In the Far East. THE MITCHELL FINALE. In the limelight ot Judge Tanner's honest confession, how utterly ab surd now seems Mitchell's mock heroic speech on the floor of the sen ate, and the whitewashing resolution of the Oregon legislature. Could any attempt at vindication h-ve a more disgusting fuiule than this? Did ever an honest confession so completely wreck a scheme of bogus defenses before ? There can be no cry of "persecu tion" now. There can be no charge of maliciousness against Senator Mitchell, in this last fatal blow. Bowed down under the shame and chagrin of his guilt, and forced by the very instincts of his better nature to make a clean breast of the whole affair. Judge Tanner's confession comes like a thunderbolt in the camp of Mitchell's defenders. The last hope of the senator Is swept away. The utter dishonesty of! the attempts made by Mitchell a ad Tanner to ward off the impending verdict of "guilty," now gives added proof that every charge against Sen ator Mitchell must be true, with per haps dosens of other acts equally as unlawful, which, for want of Investi gation, may go unwhipped. If the people of Oregon could get down to the bottom tacts and learn the Inner reasons for the 30 years delay of the Celllo canal. By the same line of reasoning which ar gues that gambling should be li censed because "men will gamble," we should license all of the vicious habits enumerated.
