Whereas only 88,174 maps were distributed In 1895. -there were 601,776 maps sent out In 104. These were distributed as follows: Through retail sale, 47.S04; through whole sale sale, 263,663; to libraries and In stitutions, 75,112; for official ' use, 67,117. Although the retail price of each map is only five cents and the whole sale price but two cents, the consid erable sum of tMlt.St was received for maps. This merely defrays the cost of the press work and does not pay for the paper on which the maps are printed or for the expense of dis tributing them. The total amount received for pub' licatlons of all kinds In 104 was 112. 222.21 as compared with (2.180.(5 In 1896. notwithstanding the fact that many publications that were sold In 1895 are now distributed free. It is only since the passage of an act of congress on February 18, 187, that the maps have been disposed of by sale. They are sold at the rate of five cents a sheet of standard slae. When 100 or more standard topo graphic atlas sheets, or their equiva lent in value In other maps, are or dered, a discount of 60 per cent will be made from the retail price; that Is. 10 standard topographic atlas sheets, will cost 12. The order may be given for that many copies of one sheet only, or for that many different sheets, and unless 'Otherwise stated this discount will also apply to pe claU a-eneral and combined maps. which may be included In the order; or the larger maps only may be or dered; but In no case can orders be filled at the wholesale rate unless the sum remitted solely tor topo- e-ranhlc maps amounts to at least 12. Ever since Its organisation in 187. the United States geological survey has been engaged In making a topo graphic survey and map of the United States. The unit of survey Is a quad rangle 15 seconds, 10 seconds, or 1 degree In extent each way, covering an area of one-sixteenth, one-fourth, or one "square degree." The unit of publication Is an atlas sheet It 1-2 by. 20 Inches, and each, sheet Is a topographic map of one of the above areas. The scale of the full degree sheet Is 1:250000, that of the 10 second sheet Is 1:26000, and that of the 15 second sheet Is 1:62500. A sheet Is designated by the name of some well known place or feature ap pearing on It, and the names of ad joining published sheets are printed on the margins. The maps are engraved on copper and printed from stone. In three col ors. The cultural features, such as roads, railroads, cities, towns, etc., as well as all lettering, are In black, all water features are printed In blue while the hill features are shown by brown contour lines. The contour Interval varies with the scale of the map and the relief of th country. Mans of limited areas economically Important are some times published which are not in con formity with the seneral scneme out lined above; these are called special mans. FIRST CURVE PITCHER. Claimed by an Albany Paper That Curves Were First Thrown There. The first curved ball was pitched by John Leland Henderson of this city, in a game between Eugene and Al bany nearly 80 years ago, says the Al bany Herald. This was In the early seventies, and Albany had the crack team of the Valley league. The Linn county town had van quished every team In the state. John Leland Henderson was at that time a logger on the upper McKenzle. He had won something of a reputation with his home team at Eugene, so when the university aggregation were up for a game with the champion players of Albany, Logger Henderson was sent for. v The seventh Inning closed before Albany got a man tq first base, while the Eugene team was scoring at euBe. The pitcher was a puxzle Is .the Al- banyltes. Henderson says he was pitching a curved ball that day and didn't know It at the time. Attorney and Mrs. Henderson were In Kugene last week. The judge says he had a very pleasant time renewing old acquaintances with people he had not seen for SO years. Henderson need to teach school In the university town, and Is acquainted with a large number of people there. Mr. Hender son's son, Louis, is a student at tne University of Oregon, and a promi nent member of the Sigma 1M frater nity. Judge Henderson was at 6alem laet week, working for the new coun ty. Mrs. Henderson, says the Judge, as an Interested spectator at the leg- iMluture. and attended every meeting of the third house while she was the capital city. For High School at Kemdrick.
