Many of the Indians of the San Carlos, Fort Apache and Mescalero reservations seek and find employ ment on rullroud work In the vicinity of the reservations. During the fis cal year 1903 over 300 Navaho In diana were employed off the reserva tion, principally with the Santa Fe Pacific Railroad company, and earn ed an average wage or 11.10 per day. The agent reported In 190J that the earnings of the N'uvajos on railroad work outside the reservation amount ed to $70,155. They are good work ers and are sought by the sugar beet farmers in Colorado, where many of them have been (with the approval of the department) profitably employed. . During the calendar year 1903, the sum of $194,000 was authorized by the department to be expended by the agenta and superintendents In charge of the Sioux re&eryallons alone. In employing Indians In lieu of rations. This policy has passed beyond the experimental stuge. The Indians are beginning to understand that the Idle and shiftless must suffer; that the government will employ, or find em ployment for all who who will work, and that only the sick and physically disabled will be fed and cared for without work. Financial. The amount appropriated by the Indian appropriation act for the fis cal year ending June 10, 1905, is $9.- 86I.40.,5. For the fiscal year ended June 0, 1904. the sum of $8,621,306 7 was appropriated, as given In previous report. Education.
