Tho entire work was completed within 22 days after tho manuscripts arrived at the state office. Walla Walla Union. Third-Termer Elected. Among the peculiarities of tho lato campaign, the candidacy of J. J. Smith, re-elected county clerk, has exulted the most comment. Mr. Smith made absolutely no fight for the of fice, being a third-termer and deem ing nil effort wasted; ho made no can vass and spent not a dollar, and yet pulled out with n plurality of over 400 votes, or more than any other candi date on either of the threo tickets. It Is a remarkable record, and speaks volumes for not only the popularity of tho man but the efficiency of the official. Crook County Journal. Shearing Over In Morrow. Sheep shearing Is now all over In Morrow county and the sheepmen nro getting their flocks away to the mountain districts for summer range. While tho ranges are overcrowded in most places, the grass is so much better than usual that the difficulties of this condition will ho greatly elim inated. Generally speaking, sheep will' start to tho mountains In good condition. Heppner Gazette. BUSINESS CARDS, SOCIETIES PROFESSIONS AND TRADES jSICIANS. ATTORNEYS. The moccasin slips his slimy length Into tho murky pool, The umbush-llag, n-qulver set, decoys the finny school; Tho wary wild-sow toles her brood off to the reedy brake, Whose serried canes from saurian preys a full-safe fortress make, The death-damp creeps nloiin tho ground, the turf-mold flushes wet, Tho boot-owl gravely leaves his perch, the yellow sun has set. From out across the morass comes tho shrill, discordant cry. Of the ghostly, tall blue heron, with Its weird succeeding sigh; The wind breath roughs with rim pies the green scum of the lake, Where the poison vapor brews and blows along the cypress brake. And It sways tho funeral mosses that festoon tho spectral trees. And trails them aleng tho oozy log hi swishing symphonies, An awesome twilight like a pnll en foltlB tho aspect drear. What ghostly murmurings from the swamp assail the timorous ear; The glowing fox-fire In the marsli stares with Its yellow eyes.
