Chief Quanah Parker Most Forcible and Prominent Man In the Propos ed New State His Mother a White Woman Who Was Captured by Comanches and Refused to Re turn to Civilization Parker Known as the "Yankee Indian." An Indian chief as n member of the United States senate, exclaims a Philadelphia paper. This Is the suggestion that has been made, and It hinges on the prop osition that Oklahoma nnd Indian territories bo admitted into the American union as one state and that It ho tacitly ogreed that ono of the United States senators from the now commonwealth bo an Indian. Whether such a plan would be practicable is still to bo demonstrat ed, but the proposition certainly smacks of poetic justice. Tlio United States senate today has In Its membership the descend ants of tho sons of nearly overy country in Europe, and has In addi tion men who were born on tho soils of Ireland, England and Norway. In view of tho fact that men of all na tionalities and clergymen of all de nominations have occupied seats In congress not to speak of a Mormon senator It is deemed fitting that an Indian, representing the original holders of the vast territory now known as the United States, could very properly and picturesquely rep resent the remnant of a once great people ou tho floor ot tho greatest deliberative body on earth. If In tho uncertainty of politics the proposition should tako practical form there is no reasonable doubt but that the honor would fall on Quannah Parker, one of tho ablest and wealthiest Indians in America Parker, who is ono of the chiefs of tho Comanches, might properly b" called tho connecting link between tho aborigines and the white people of tho united States, his career nas been filled with tho most thrilling adventures. Quannah Parker, who Is now about 50 years of age, Is tho son ot a whtto woman and a Comanche In dian. In ono of the first Comanche raids In Texas his mother was cap tured by tho Indians and her parents scalped and killed. Tho Texas Bangers, that celebrated body of fearless men, organized by tho early settlers for their own de fense and protection, gave chase and pursued tho Indians to their lair. The chaso was so rapid that the white men compelled tho Indians to abandon overything but their light traveling stuff, nnd eventually cor raled them at tho foot of the Wichi ta mountains. After a spirited skirmish the wo man was recaptured and taken back to civilization and handed over to her relatives in Texas. But tho woman had had a tasto of Indian lifo and slio preferred It to life among those of her own blood. Under such circumstances It was only a question of tlmo when of her own volition she returned to tho In dians. At an early age she married one of tho Comanches, and Quannah Parker was the outcome ot this curi ous match. Ills mother died when he was a child and Quannah grew up as an Indian among tho Indians, naturally falling Into their ways and customs, speaking their language, wearing their dress and living their lite. Ho bad natural abilities of a high order und these asserted themselves oven In his youth'. Beforo ho had at tained his majority ho was a power among tho Indians, and while yet a young man he became the chief of ono of tho principal bands of Coman cho Indians. From an Indian standpoint ho might bo fancifully rognrded as a multl-mllllonalro. but as n matter of fact tho value of his holdings of real estate, livestock and monoy In bank Is nearer to $100,000 of our monoy than tho other amount mentioned. Ho has represented tho Comancho Indians In tho leasing uf their lands to white settlors, who deslrod th" gicen sward for tho puiposo of graj: i.ig their cattle. Tho men who have conducted nego tiations with Chief Parker are willing to testify that ho Is fully able to tako caro of the Indians ho repre sented on such occasions. Indeed, his capacity for driving n sharp bar gain has earned him tho nick-name of the "Yankeo Indian Chief." Chief Parker's homo nnd reserva tion nestlo at tho bottom of tho foot hills ot the Wichita mountains. Ho owns a modern, comfortnblo and roomy 24-story framo building, where ho lives tho lifo of n civilized man with his wife and children. A dispatch from Mukden says that tho Russian sol diers habitually speak with contempt of tho quality of tho Japanese troops. The Jnps, thoy say, are good coolies, hut only In that respect aro thoy ex cellent; but all the evidence that has reached tho Russian headquarters as to the Japaneso hospitals and their medical and surgical arrangements generally Is unanimous as to the ex cellence of that part of the enemy's equipment. Two wounded men of the 11th Rus sian regiment, which suffered so se verely at Kinllen Cheng, managed to escape through tho enemy's linos, and have reached Mukden. These men speak In enthusiastic terms of tho manner In which tho Japanese treat tho Russian wounded. Tho Japanese army doctors, they say, aro splendid, and thoy personally saw to the comfort of all tho Russian wound ed. Each Russian otflccr taken pris oner is supplied with a separate tent and Is allowed to superintend the preparation of tho food for the Rus sian wounded. Temporary assistance Is given to the Japaneso wounded In splendidly arranged field hospitals. About 450 Russian wounded wero carefully at tended to in tho Japanese camp, nnd tho relations between them nnd the enemy's troops were excellent, based, says tho correspondent, "upon the true comradeship and friendship of mutually respecting soldiers." Tlio Japanese doctors removed tho wound ed from the flold of battle without regard to nationality. As it was practically impossible to remove all tho wounded from tho ground to tho field hospital without delay, thoso whom surgical aid would most likely euro were taken in hand L first, and tho moro serious cases wero given first nld in tho flold. Whenever a wounded man was dis covered, whether Russlnn or Japan ese, ho was placed on his feet, and It able to stand unsupported for n few seconds ho was taken on a litter to tho hospital. Cruelties were undoubtedly perpo- trated on tho Russian wounded, hut tho miscreants wero invariably Chi nese, who aro bitterly anti-Russian. It is said to bo a common remark among tho Chlneso, "If tho Japaneso win in this war wo will send basket- fulls of Russian ears to Pekin."
