It Is safe to assert that tho Odeon theater never hold a larger nor a more Intelligent audience that that of this afternoon on this occasion of tho formnl open ing of tho biennial convention of tho Oenoral Federation of Women's Clubs. From tho parquet to tho top most gallery tho auditorium was filled wtlh representative women from every stato and territory of tho I union, On the stage wore seated two I score or moro of women whose names aro familiar throughout the country The roll call showed the convention to bo tho largest In point of numbers over held by tho federation. It was a case of "ladles first" with Mayor Wells and President Francis 'of tho exposition. A half dozen con ventions opened In St. Louis today and tho two officials were supposed to deliver welcoming addresses nt nearly nil of them, In order that i both officials might bo on hand to welcome tho fair visitors to the bien nial all conflicting engagements wcro cancelled. After several selections of music the convention was opened with an Invocation by Mrs. Caroline llartlott Crane of Michigan. In addition to the greetings on behalf of tho city and tho exposition there wore ad dresses of wolcomo by Mrs. Philip N. Moore, president of the Missouri stnte federation, and Mrs. W. E. Fischel, representing tho federated clubs of St. Louis. Tho response was mnde by Mrs. D. T. S. Denlson, president of tho general federation. These formalities nnd tho appoint ment of committees occupied tho time until adjournment. Tomorrow morning will bo devot ed to routlno business connected with tho affairs of thu federation. In tho afternoon there will bo an education al session, tho speakers and subjects being as follows: -Mrs. Frank L. Wean, of Illinois, "Compulsory Edu cational Laws and Their Enforce ment;" Miss Daisy Splckard of Ne braska, "Character Hnlldlng In Pub lic Education Indirectly by Moans of Literature and History;" Mrs. Jona than F. S. Mltchoss of Washington,' "Character Building In Education Directly by Required Instruction as In France;" Mrs. C. E. Hush of Con necticut and Miss Mary A. Bacon of Georgia, "A National Aspect of Pub lic Education." Tomorrow evening will be devoted to a discussion on "Child Labor," with reports from various parts of the country and nn address by Edgar G. Murphy on "Child Labor In America." Who will be the now president of tho federation? This Is the ques tion which Is uppermost In tho minds of tho delegates Just now, nnd Is tho causo of a spirited campaign that would do credit to a political con vention of tho first magnitude Mrs. Denlson, of Now York, tho present head of tho federation, has declined td be her own successor. Her with drawal leaves tho contest between Mrs. Patt-Decker of Colorado, and Mrs, Robert J. llurdctto of Califor nia, These nro tho only active can didates in tho field and tho running between them appears to be about oven. With tho convention about evenly divided between tho two It Is not improbable that a "dark horso" may bo brought Into tho race with good chances of success. 0. R. & N. SUMMER BOOK. R. M.
