Mr. Blowers came to take Into cus tody Stevo Fowler, who was nrrest ed some days ago on a chnrgo of having sold whisky to Indians here. Fowler was given an examination be fore United States Commissioner John Hnlley, Jr., and wns bound over to the next term of the federnl court at Portland. Ho was taken to Portland by the marshal. Joe Williams, iho Indian, who was arrested at the time Fowler was. for having given whisky to Indian boys on the reservation, wns given a hear ing, and though .. was known that he was guilty, the evidence, could not be gathered together, and he was discharged. Ed Murphy, n saloon man, wns also arrested upon tho same charge and was up before tho commission er's court. The Boston. Secular Chair Founded In a Catholic University. Washington, D. C, April 13. With the acceptance by the Catholic Uni versity today of a fund of $50,000 to found a chair of American history, that Institution enters upon a new era In Its work of education In secu lar branches. The presentation of the fund was made In Divinity hall this afternoon, In the presence of a distinguished assemblage of digni taries of the church from every sec tion of the country, together with many prominent members of tho Knights of Columbus, which organi zation raised the fund and presented it to the university. Kobed in his scarlet vestments, and attended by a score oi archbish ops, bishops and priests, Cardinal Gibbons formally accepted the fund and made reply to the presentation speech of Edward L. Hcarn of Now Haven, Conn., the supremo head of the Knights of Columbus. The fund of $50,000 was collected entirely from voluntary contribu tions and it required loss than three years to realize the amount, Jorsoy City, N. J., April 13. In tho court of oyer and terminer today tho case of Julius Eckel, charged with' the murder of his wife on Februnry C last, was called to trial. Eckel has also been indicted for killing Mrs. Annie McDormott, wlfo of the pro-i prletor of the saloon where the don hie tragedy occurred, but tho trial on this chnrge will depend upon tho outcome of the trial for killing Mrs. I Eckel.
