Secular Chair Founded In a Catholic
University.
Washington, D. C, April 13. With
the acceptance by the Catholic Uni
versity today of a fund of $50,000 to
found a chair of American history,
that Institution enters upon a new
era In Its work of education In secu
lar branches. The presentation of
the fund was made In Divinity hall
this afternoon, In the presence of a
distinguished assemblage of digni
taries of the church from every sec
tion of the country, together with
many prominent members of tho
Knights of Columbus, which organi
zation raised the fund and presented
it to the university.
Kobed in his scarlet vestments,
and attended by a score oi archbish
ops, bishops and priests, Cardinal
Gibbons formally accepted the fund
and made reply to the presentation
speech of Edward L. Hcarn of Now
Haven, Conn., the supremo head of
the Knights of Columbus.
The fund of $50,000 was collected
entirely from voluntary contribu
tions and it required loss than three
years to realize the amount,
