Instead of securing rivers and har hors, which he sought, or Insular af. fairs, which was offered him hv Speaker Cannon only a lew days ago, uongressman iiormann is given mcmhershlp on tho committees on In dian nffalrs and election of president, vice presiuont and representative in congress, while Williamson Is made R mcmher of Irrigation and mines and mining. "There is nn Interesting story con nected with Hermann's failure tn no on Insular affairs, after the offer mndo him by Speaker Cahnon. When ho learned that ho was slated lor In sular affairs, nnd not the committee of his choice, Iiormann consulted with his colleagues, with the result thnt the delegation resolved to make a last stand In the bono of forclne jhio on tho river and barber ronnri IUU. "It wns said if the wishes of the state should be further ignored by tho speaker of the house, and Her mann should be denied tho one com mittee placo most sought und of most advantage to Oregon, this ad verse sentlmont at home would be strengthened and tho chances of cur rying the state for the nopublicnns in tho election next year might be materially lessened. In fact, it wbb stated that a continuance of the poi ley of ignoring tho wishes of tho peo ple of Oregon would very likely puive disastrous In 1904. "On the ground, the delegation ap pealed to tho president to Intercede with Speaker Cannon to secure for Iiormann a placo on the committee on rivers and harbors. The presi dent, of course, took no hand In the matter, but a copy of the delegation.'; letter was sent to Spcakor Cannon, with the result that Ikrmann, in stead of getting a committee better than Insular affairs, was given one o" less import. "For the first time in its history, state of Washington In the present congress far outranks Oregon In the committee places accorded Its mem hors. In the Fifty-eighth congress tho Pacific Northwest has no repre sentation on tho public lands com mittee of tho house, and will have little say In framing whatever legis lation is attempted to correct the public lnnd evils."
