Ask Your Doctor He will tell you That barley-malt is a half-digested food, as good as food can be. That hops are an ex cellent tonic. That thclittle alcohol in beer only 84 percent is an aid to digestion. But Purity is Essential But he will tell you that i beer must be protected from germs, and brewed in absolute cleanliness. He'll say, too, that age is important, for age brings perfect fermentation.' Without it, beer ferments on the stomach, causing biliousness. Schlitz beer is brewed with all precautions. It is the recog- J nized standard all the world A over, because of its purity. M Askforlht Brevity Battling, mk Phone 51 Main, W H. The prelimi nary examination of II, M. St. Cyr. tho mining man, who is charged with the murder of Archie Emmomls, of I.nrdo, was completed for tho time be ing yesterday. After the evidence for the prosecution hail lieon tnuen me , hearing was postponed, until July 20 to give the defense nn opportunity to ' iimko any showing it may desire. It Is believed, however, tho defense will not introduce any evidence and the I opinion Is quite general that the case is closed so far as the prelimi nary hearing Is concerned, the formal finding of the committing magistrate boing tho only nctlon necessary to close It. There is no doubt St. Cyr will be held for trial. An effort will be made to get him ndmltted to ball. The principal testimony was given by Hllla Kofki, the Finn girl Who was an eye witness of the tragedy. She said she saw Emmonds ride tip to tho St Cyr place, tie his horse nnd go into the stable. Ho came out lending the two horses, possession of which formed the basis of the dispute be tween the two men. Emmonds had not proceeded far with the nnlmals before St. Cyr nppeared on the scene and shot him with a rifle, ac cording to the witness. She ran Into the house, hearing two more shots af ter she gained the Inside. St Cyr is reported to have said that Emomnds fired three shots at him from a revolver before he fired. A revolver was found at the spot where Emmonds first fell, lying be side his hat. Four chambers were empty. The theory of tho prosecution Is that St. Cyr placed the revolver there after firing shots which lodged In a shed In line with where he was standing, The evidence disclosed that two bullets found lodgment in Emmonds' body The first struck him In the right jaw, ranging around and sever ing his jugular. Emmonds went nbout 10 feet and fell. He nrose and went 40 or 50 feet farther, his course be ing traced by the blood. It Is claim ed St Cyr shot him again back of tho 1 right oar, the shot lodging above tho left car just under the skin. Nothing was brought out In the evidence to substantiate the statement that there were powder marks on the victim's head. l"t'H-H"l-H"t"l"H"H"KW-4"H-l"H- I $ $ $ t There are Many Things we would like to suggest this week and one of the most im portant is Diamond VV. E, Peterson, Iibb been organ ized to exploit the coal holds of the John Day valley. The syndicate has, through options, leases and purchases, secured control of 1108 acres of land lying on tho John Day river, 75 miles below Canyon City. This land lies in what Is considered tho very heart of tho coal Holds, as exposeu by tho outcrops of the coal seams. Samples taken from representative points gave tho following interesting results: Sample Xo. 1 Moisture, 5.45; vola tile matter, 15.:i0: fixed carbon, 44.70; ash, 2G.10. Samplo No. 2 Moisture. 12.05; volatile matter, 20.45; fixed carbon. 41.40; ash. 34.54. Sample No. 3 Moisture, 3.110; volatile matter. 39.25; fixed carbon. 27.10; ash, 29.45. Sample No. 4 .Moisture, 4.24; vola tllo matter, 34.85; fixed carbon, 53.2C; aHh 7.05. From the Toregolng it will readily lie seen that the coal is a good grade of coking coal, and that it is in sulll Hont iiunntlttes to bo of commercial value is evidenced by tho fact that the seams nro from 8 to 40 feet wide. The coal occurs several miles buck Irom the river, nt an elevation of from 000 to 700 feet above Its level. There is a rapidly growing demand locally for oven an Inferior grade of i o ing coal, caused, by the building or the Sumpter smelter, nnd the pro Jf( lon of other smelting plants In this district. One drawback to tho com mercial vnluo of the John Day coal Is tho fact that It Is at present isolot "d from transportation lines. I THE FLOWER OF THE AGES This means tue American Business Man.
