Maracaibo, Venezuela, Jan. 21. One hundred and twenty shots were fired from the Fort of San Carlos dur ing the engagement Saturday with the German cruiser Panther. The walls of the fort were slightly dam aged. The reports that the German gun boat at the time of the engagement was trying to force the entrance of the lake in order to capture the Vene zuelan gunboat Miranda, which is In hiding Jhere, are generally believed here. The Venezuelan government has glvn out a statement to this ef fect. IMPRES8ED WITH SIBERIA. Gen. Miles Arrives at St. Petersburg After Tour Through Russia. St. Petersburg, Jan. 21. General Miles and party arrived here Monda? from Moscow, after having spent two hours In the city. General Miles trav eled on a special train and -was ac companied by an escort through Manchuria. In an interview today the general said he had been lm- ressed with the magnitude and the future possibilities of the country which has been opened up by the trans-Siberian railway, General Miles will remain here sev eral days- and will then proceed to Berlin, Paris and London. 8ENTENCED TO IMPRISONMENT. Wilcox, Who Killed His Sweetheart, Nellie Cropsey, Gets Verdict. Hartford, Conn., Jan. 21. The Jury in tho case wherein Wilcox Is charged with killing his sweetheart, Nellie Cropsey, today rendered a verdict of murder in the second degree and fix ed the punishment at 30 years' Im prisonment. The flrst trial had- a death sentence. To Nominate Candidates for Repre sentative Tongue's Successor. Salem, Ore., Jan. 21. The prevail ing opinion around tho capitol Is that party conventions are necessary to nominate candidates for the office of representative in congress made vacant by the death of the lato Thom. as H. Tongue. This opinion is In ac cordance with two precedents estab llshed In tho administration of Gov ernor Grover. According to these precedents, new primaries will be huld by both parties. The precedents come from the death of Josph G. Wil son in 1874 and George A. LaDow in 1875, who were elected to congress, but who died before they qualified to itie omce. WITHOUT RESULT. The freight handlers and warehousemen through cut the United States, Canada ami Mexico are to be organized Into one union to be called tho International Freight Handlers and Warehouse men's Association of America. Ono died bofora reaching -tho shore and tho othorss are still unconscious. Tho ship's owners wlro that tho ship had a crew of nlno men. It is believed that the others woro killed by, falling masts. Indianapolis, Jan. 21. At the miners convention today, working wage .schedules were discussed. The Ohio and West Virginia men want a 0 percent increase. Tho Indiana, Illinois and Pennsylvania men only want ib per cent increases of wages, Elected Officers. Washington, Jan. 21. The Marino Engineers' Benefit Association today elected George uhler, of Pbiladel pbla, president, and Frank JoneB, of San Francisco, vice-president. Pope Leo Reported Dead. Paris, Jan. 21. The report was re ceived here this afternoon from Rome that Pope Leo is dead. Ef forts will be made to confirm the re-port. Clark Dunlap, tho postmaster of Wasco, who, according to tho testi mony of Postofflce Inspector T, G. Clark, embezzled $631:23 from tho government by reporting false sales to the department at Washington, has refunded the money and is still in bis position as postmaster.
