German Bombardment Tried to Force

Maracaibo, Venezuela, Jan. 21.
One hundred and twenty shots were
fired from the Fort of San Carlos dur
ing the engagement Saturday with
the German cruiser Panther. The
walls of the fort were slightly dam
aged.
The reports that the German gun
boat at the time of the engagement
was trying to force the entrance of
the lake in order to capture the Vene
zuelan gunboat Miranda, which is In
hiding Jhere, are generally believed
here. The Venezuelan government
has glvn out a statement to this ef
fect.

Wilcox, Who Killed His Sweetheart,
Nellie Cropsey, Gets Verdict.
Hartford, Conn., Jan. 21. The Jury
in tho case wherein Wilcox Is charged
with killing his sweetheart, Nellie
Cropsey, today rendered a verdict of
murder in the second degree and fix
ed the punishment at 30 years' Im
prisonment. The flrst trial had- a
death sentence.

reaching -tho shore and tho othorss
are still unconscious. Tho ship's
owners wlro that tho ship had a crew
of nlno men. It is believed that the
others woro killed by, falling masts.
