Strong Possibility of the Road Being Made a Branch Line of the North ern Pacific. The citizens of Walla Walla are considerably worked tip over the pos sibility of losing the W. & C. R. of ficials and general office in case of the swallowing up of this lino by the Northern Pacific. At the. present time the general manager, treasurer, chief engineer, freight and passenger agent and traffic agent, are located in Walla Walla and the Union claims that in case the road is absorbed by tne larger road these officers will be done away with, which will mean a loss to the town of not less than $2S, uuu per annum, in addition to tho above officers the road superintend ent, and several train crews are lo cated at Walla Walla. me crews will go with the othor officers, but tho road superintendent may remain as the present lino or the W. & C. JL from Dayton to Pendleton contains 175 miles and this, added to the work of the present superin tendent of the Northern Pacific would m an probability, make more than ho would be able to handle. ine above sum given as sn actual loss to the city of Walla Walla does not include the material for repair work that is purchased annually. Tho value of this material alone would be quite an item. It is also thoucht that the repair shops at Hunt's a unc tion and the office of train dispatcher would be done .away with by the movement rumored. The change of the manaKement of the road from its Dresent offlcerk tn the officials of the main line of the Northern Pacific would work no dam age' in this city. Beside, it undoubt edly would be a benefit to the trav eling public who are compelled to go over the road. If those who ride on the "high line" knew its consolida tion with the Northern Pacific would give them .better passenger Bervice, they would welcome the change with outstretched hands. The accommodations on this line from Pendleton to Pasco are far from being what ought to be given the people. When there is a passenger coach on thetrain at all it is a com Dinea passenger and baggage car, and hardly a day paBses that this 1b not filled with Indians and the whites have to crowd themselves in the car with them. It is no infrequent thing to have to make the trip in a regular caboose. The kind used for work crewB and sometimes a box car is the best on the line. People who have to go on the road have to put up with this fare for it is the best the com pany will provfde. 8CIENCE SC0RE8 AGAIN.
