The house committee on rules has unanimously rfgreed on a rule for consideration of a resolution giving the Commissioner from Porto Rico the right to the floor of the house of representatives. The will of the Very Rev. E. A. Hoffman, dean of the General Theo logical Seminary, has been filed for probate at New York. It disposes of an estate estimated at $12,000,000 to $15,000,000. Among the honorary degrees just conferred was that of LL. D., upon Governar Leonard Wood, by Wil liams College, Mass. At the alumni dinner General Wood talked briefly on his work in Cuba. . Advices received from Cabul say that the Ameer of Afghanistan, Ha bib Oullah Khan, early In June mar ried his daughters to six prominent chiefs, Including the commander-in chief of the Afghan forces. x Harvey Wilson Ball, son of Bishop Bell, of North Carolina, and Irene Perry, an actress, have just been married according to a Boston spe cial. The ceremony was performed, It is stated, in St. Andrews church j by the Rev. Dr. Kidder, in the pres ence of a few friends. Wednesday afternoon Engineer Ernest Larter, of Kalispell, Mont., who was running a work train on the Great Northern .at Essex, in com pany with It. Horner, night operator at Essex, built a raft and crossed the north fork of the Flathead river,, about two miles below town while Ashing. At last the much-talked-of Enstern Oregon League is to be organized for tho. fall season. Tho meeting tor us zntlon will be hold at 7 o'clock this evening and will be attended by representatives of live ot' the six teams talked of as possible members of the league. Manager Basche, of the Baker City Gold Diggers, and Ray, of the La Grande Beet Pullers, are now in the city for the purpose of nttendiug the meeting, .and Managers Sharp stein, of tho Walla Walla Sharpshoot ers, and Morltz, of the Dayton Dus ters, will arrive on the 5:30 train this evening and will meet with Man ager Cohen, of the Indians, this eve ning, for the purpose of discussing the proposition of forming the league and arranging a schedule of games. There can be but little doubt of the ultimate formation of tho league, as Vo.ii the towns to be represented this evening are enthusiastic over the proposition, and are anxious to join in on the league. It is assured that at least four teams will be in cluded in the new organization, and probably five. There has been some little doubt as to Walla walla's par ticipation owing to tho question as to whether or not tho necessary finances would be put up by the en thusiasts of that city, but as Manager Sharpstein is coming down this even ing, it is presumed that tho necessary funds have been raised. Wesley N. Matlock Writes From the Northern City. Mrs. W. F. Matlock has received a letter from Wosloy N. Matlock, her son, who left here more than a month ago for Nome, stating that he arrived safe without an eventful trip. Mr. Matlock speaks of tho steamer Portland being adrift In the Ice and going toward the Artie. Fears are entertained of its loss with all on William Hume, the veteran can nory-man of the Columbia river, died Thursday at his home at Eagle Cliff, Wash., at tho age of 72 years. He leaves a wife and two grown daugh ters, both residing at home. Misses Lottie and Aura Hume. He has a brother at Astoria, George W. Hume, Bids were received Thursday by tho Port of Portland for tho construe tlon of a drydock. They were read and referred to Engineer Blackwell for consideration. The lowest bid- dor was Joseph Pacnuet, at $195,000 Tho bids all specified that work was to be completed within 12 months Sid Lowry, of South Plain, had a desperate encounter with a burglar Monday night. Ho awoke In the night to find a man In his bedroom, trying to open a box. Lowry jumped out of bed and a scuffle ensued in tho dark, during whicli he struck the burglar In tho face, and grasping a jacK-knire, sloshed with It rjght and left. The burglar seized a chair, rendered Lowry unconscious and mado his escape. A good article of granite has been discovered twlthing nix miles of Ba ker City. There Is no first class building rock In that part of tho state, or at least, none was known to exist until a man from Walla discovered this granite near tho Gor don mine recently. Tho granite is black and white, and so marked as to bo quite rare. Already tho own er has sold enough rock taken from Lis new quarry to ulniot pay for the entire piece of ground. i He.lso says that Nome is quite a city but the country ground looks very much the same as eastern Ore gon rolling with no tlmbor. The snow Is most all gone and the ground thawed out so that mining operations can now bo carried on to advantage, Ho says that William Beagle, also ot Pendleton, is out on the mining claim In which Mr. Matlock is In torested. Robert Tonoy, tho young man shot and killed near Narrows, Harney county about a Weqk ago, by a fellow cowboy named Daley, was a nephew of Senator Booth, of Eugene, Lane county. It Is now stated that Daley was under tho Influence of liquor and made offensive remarks in the presence of tho wife of Toney's em ployer, who was absent from home. Ordered away ho went to a nearby barn and got, a rifle, and returning, fired the first shot, the fire being .re turned by Tonoy until he, was fatally shot.
