The department lias decided that if it can possibly be arranged the mail coining to the residents of Pen dleton will bo delivered at their doors if they so wish, beginning with the first day of July and from that time 01 J. W. Erwin, assistant superintend ant of free delivery, was in town a few days ago from ban i-rancisco, looking over the city and locating the places for the mail boxes, and laid out the routes for the delivery boys. The ooxes, with perhaps a few slight changes, will be located as the following places: Southeast corner of ain and Court streets. Southeast corner of Main and Court streets. Nine applications are now in for the civil service examinations for a place on the local staff of deliveries. Only two of these will be able to get the place and they will be selected next Saturday. In addition to the two carriers a substitute will be appoint ed to take the place of either of the carriers in case of illness or any thing happening when one of the reg ulars would have to leave his work for any length of time. The examinations will be held at the court house, beginning at 9 o'clock Saturday morning, June 7. Albert Bedell, secretary of the board of civil examiners of Walla Walla, will be here and examine the appli cants for this position. Then the re sult of the examinations will be sent to Washington, D. C, where they will be looked over by the department and the two the best fitted according to their rating, will be appointed as de liverers and the third best will get the place of substitute. This will take several days and It will keep the department on the jump to get the applications to Washington, the certificates returned and the carriers fitted for the work by the time set for starting the delivery. Those accepted will have to order uniforms and familiarize themselves with the free delivery rules, which will take some time. The postmaster will supply them with blank slips, which will be taken around and left at every home reached by the deliv ery. These blanks are expected to be filled out with tho name of the occu pants and number of the house and then they will be gathered up and the carriers will in this way get ac quainted witli their route and the people they have to deliver mall to. The Deliveries. Three deliveries will bo made to tho business part of town from tho first, but only one will be made in tho residence portion. This is be- cause of the way the train, run at present, wnicu immu il i .. im tnmip further out lor a ueinuij iu , than the business houses after the pvenimr mail is in. The deliveries iu uu"-"- i- tlons of town will be made at o'clock in the morning to get the night mail; at 9 o'clock n the fore noon to catch the mall from No. 1, Koing east, and one in the evening after Nos. 2 and 7 from Spokane ami Portland arrive. The delivery to the residence part of town will be made beginning at 9 o'clock a. m. Put On the Number. It will be a good thing if who write letters and have mail come to ;hcn after the establishment of the free delivery, instruct tlilr friends and those addressing them to put the number of their residence on mail when addressing them, as well ns the postofflce. While this is not positive ly necessary, it will simplify matters wonderfully for the carriers and will the mail reach its destination i without any trauble. "NO CLINKERS." "Cokes the Coal and Burns the Coke" A Testimonial From Some of Pendleton's Business Citizens. Mr. W. G. McPhorson, Portland, Oregon. Dear Sir: After having given the "Perfect" Hot Air Blast Furnace a thorough test in the last two years we can truthfully say that we have never seen its equal for economy. Your statement that it "cokes the coal and burns the coke," we -have found to be correct, for we find that after burning a fire continuously, there is left only a very small quan tity of ashes, and no clinkers, the ashes being as fine as flour. The splendid results we have attained with this furnace have truly surpris ed us. Yours veo truly, F. E. JUDD, C. S. JACKSON, T. C. TAYLOR, F. B. CLOPTON, H. L. HEXTER.
