B\ the adaption of this misguided theory incompetents ‘ I lave been elected and retained in office, when the first prompt ings of intelligent choice should have demanded an opposite se- i ection. The party whip prevailed, the big bosses begat small * ones, the small bosses begat lesser satellites, the murky constel lation of machine politics was complete and the party captains marched to victory with an assurance born less o f f a i t h in theirj inherent ability to serve the public than in their knowledge of 1 men and sheep. I In local politics, where the ability of the aspirant to admin ister the duties of office is brot closely home to us, the choice ! resolves itself into a mere question of business ability and p e r-1 sonal integrity. The taxpayer who permits his party allegiance I to dictate his choice of county officials is a poor business man. He is spoiling his own pocket to bolster up a party system which has little use for him save in his utility as a single vote. The News believes that the Democratic ticket of Jackson county is composed of thoroly reliable and competent men, well qualified to fill the offices they seek. It believes that the business inter ests of every voter in Jackson county demands a just appraisal of their probable worth in county service. The day of party politics in county affairs is p assin g -as it should. The split ticket is the criterion of good sense and good business. Jackson County, Oregon by B IN M. LAM PM AN AT«?
