To gecuro lifo nml progress in tho Orange, tho Mnslor, niJcil by nil olllccra nml nicmbord, should, n fow duya prior to tho mooting, givo much thought to questions eolcctcd for discussion and ac tion, and at convenient seasons aid in suggesting subjects for discussion. A connnitteo on TopicH should bo ap pointed, to whom nil members desiring, can presort t subjects, nml front tho sub jects HUggcstcd, tho Grange can select by volo thd ones best suited for tho next meeting. Wo do not bclievo in handling questions, that from their very nnttiro nml charactor, no dcllnito conclusions, for tho bcnellt of mciuberu or tho order -enn bo reached. Tho primary and lending object of tho ordor is to expand tho minds, enlarge tho viows nnd dovclop tho moral, intel lectual and social faculties of tho com munity. Recreation ia best had in Grange meotings by a change from nb- atruso ami didlcult problems of thought to light nnd nmusiug thomos. This courso preserves tho faoultics from im pairment and gives n keener relish to tho mooting. As n rulo tho farmor devotes too much thought, or rather too contin uous nnd uninterrupted study to tho beat manner of realizing on his crop, nnd ho too often loses sight of tho higher nml holtor aspirations nnd duties of life. If ho would divMo his timo so as to donate a good part of it to social intercourse, to tho family circle, to neighborhood im provements and less to howailing over tho low prico of wheat, tho stringency in llnnucos, nnd tho strifo for political picforment, tho lifo of thoGrango would grow nml tho moctiugs bo far better nt tended. Wo do not menu that discussions of llnauco, crops and tho markets should bo ignored, but that in place of theso subjects boing tho main and all absorb ing t homed, thcro should bo injected spicy and amusing topics as sauco and .condiments to tho feast. Wo wnnt not only n foast of reason, but niso a How of soul. In this busy monoy-mnking ago where o many demands are made upon tho jmrso strings of tho farmer, when his .timo and labor nro required to feed, .clotho aid educato his offspring and pro .vido a start for their futuro competency, Jio is too apt to nogloct tho recreation .of mind so essential to tho demands of his higher nature. All work without rest is just ns umvibo as nil play without work. Properly Directed Efforts. Thcro nro many pcoplo who do not Accomplish useful purposos becauso ihoy fail to direct efforts properly. Thoy may havo nbundnnt wisdom to plan but (thoy lack that pcrsistoneo which leads to execution, and without Hint plans havo no great vnluo. If an illustration wcro needed it might bo found in tho Grange, Tho ordor was planned wisely for tho advancement of persons in whoso interest it is offered ; but the plan is utterly without vnluo except as mem bers of tho order exert themselves to ob tain the objocts sought Thoy may not depend on their fellow's to accomplish purposes of tho order, for their own part is impcrativo precisely as it is with their fellows. Each person must accept indi vidual responsibilities and put forth ef fort to aid in achioving tho objects of tho ordor. If this responsibility wero hon estly and fully adopted, accompanied by tho required elfbrt, thero would bo such gain as no association of persons has ever seen in the history of the world no obstacles would prevent tho Patrons of Husbandry from directing tho affairs of the nation. Tho possibilities are all plainly in view, dependent for their at tainment on the etfbrts of member re inforced by thousands who would quick ly join under leadership that would com mand respectful consideration from all interests nffectod. One of tlio strangest things in our po litical history is tho idea that n Patron should tako no part in politics. Why, bless you, when a farmer joins tho Grange ho docs not loso his citizenship ; ho docs not becoino an nlicn ; ho does not sacrillco tho right of sufliigo; ho does not ceaso to ho amonablo to tho lawj why, to tell tho truth, ho is not oven ex empt from taxation. Why then should ho not bo intrusted in politics? Politics is tho scienco of government, nnd ns overy patriot nnd Patron is interested in tho success of good government ho would bo a poor citizen and n poorer Patron if ho did not tnko pnrt in tho etrugglo be tween tho contending parties. "It is right for oory member to do all in his power legitimately 'to inllucnco for good tho action of any political party to which ho bolongs. It is his duty to do nil ho cnu in his own party to put down biibo ry, corruption and trickery; to seo that nono but competent, faithful nnd honest men, who will unflinchingly stand by our industrial interests, nro nominated for nil positions of trust ; nnd to have carried out tho principle which should always characterize every Patron; for wo took tho greatest good to tho greatest number, and desirn to purify tho politi cal ntmosphcro of tho wliolo country."
