WILLAMETTE FARMER: SALEM, OREGON, NOVEMBER 7, 1884. Ite'. r'l- t'b ! 'J PA. panlfrjf Feeding Fowls. The rapid digestion of food ini fowl's stomach calls for nn nlmost continuous supply of food. In a discussion of this question in tho Now York Times, that paper Bays: llogularily of supply is of tho greatest imnortmico whon the con sumption is so rapid. If tho supply is not regular, there is ii-grcat loss. Tlioro is not only a wnsto of energy, hut a wasto of timo in restoring this waste of power, nnd it is on this account that so many fowls merely livo along mid do not produce eggs iw freely ns is expected nlthough tho quantity of food is suppos ed to ho quite liberal. Tho syfllom of Honding tho fowls to rooit with n full holly, and keeping thorn till dayhungor ing nnd thirsting for food is to blame for much of tho short-comings of the hens. Tho quantity of food required by nn animal is estimated at about JJ per cont of tho livo weight daily. This merely supports lifoj all increase of weight, or any product whatever, must bo supplied by an extra allowance, so that 20 hens, weighing 100 pounds, would need threo nintu of solid nutritious food daily to livo nnd do no more. This is equal to thrco-twonticths of n pint for ii lion. Two-twentieths, or one-tenth of a pint, or about, one and one-half ounces of food, is, then, required everyday for the production of eggs, tho lolal daily food requirements being one-fourth of n pint, nnd this is tho established rule, from long experience, among poullrykccicrs. One quart of corn or other grain for eight hens is tho legular daily allowance, given in at least two meals, and it has been found that a Hock of hous, when supplied with a constant provision of grain lieforo them, will eonmimo this quantity and no more, in addition to what small tilings in the shape of Hies and other insects, grass, etc., they may pick up. A Fouttry Homo for Winter. We are an advocate of chickens roost ing out of doors during tho summer mouths, but u good house for them is nn absolute necessity in tho winter, and those who are not provided with com fortable quarters for their poultry for this winter should begin to build at once.? A good chicken houno is of moro im portune.) than some jieople realize. It does not follow, because our ulimate is less cold than tho East, that Kens can roost on tho fenco or in the tree?. Dur ing tho rainy Benson thoy need shelter Irom tlie storm, ami tuey win noi my without it. It will do very well to lot them roost in the trees during tho summer season, provided you kuen u uoou dog to guoni them, and they do not get strained or injured in Hying down from high places. Hut it is'notsnfu to allow tho heaviest breeds of chickens, such us Iiralmms, Cochins, and Plymouth ItockH, to roost more than four feet high, and two feet is much better than four. Build the house tight ulxmttho lower part so that it will bo secure against in truders of all kinds, but givo plenty of ventilation at the top; have portable ncsbt and roosts, co that they can bo taken out and cleansed as often as neces sary. Fattening aeese. (Iccm, like other fowl, by proper miutngumciit, may ho easily fattonod; it is well known that unless they are killed, and put into market, at their fattest period, they do not long bold llesb, and rapidly become lean. Tho l'reneh method in fattening these fowls oimsi.-t in plucking the feathers from the belly I in giving them abundance of food and drink, and in cooping them up more closely than is practiced with common fowls; cleanliness and quietude, being above all things indispensable. TheUst time to k'gin fattening is in tho? mouth of November, or as soon as cold weather has fairly net in ; if it is longer delayed, the pairing k'ukiii logins, and prevents them from becoming fat. If you bao not too many goose- to fatten, a good way is to put them into n cask, with boles iKircd in it, through which thoy can thiust their heads to feed ; and being naturally voracious, their love of food is greater than any desire for liberty, so that they fatten very rapidly. Hy this method, and fed on a snuub made of buckwheat, barley, or Indian meal, with milk and boiled potatoes, thoy can In) mndo leady for market in from threo to lour weeks. winter seta in, thoy will probably not begin laying before spnne, and tho egg crop will bo short. A bottor way is, to food tho hens well whon moulting, and as all do not moult at ono time, some eggs may bo obtained noarly, or quite all through that trying period Uy a judicious modo of feeding, connected with a littlo stimulating fowl, wo mny bring thorn through and put them in a fix to lay and dovolop a good coat of now feathers before cold weather sots in. Thus tho chnncos will be, that if properly housed, a supply of eegs will bo hnd all winter. From this courso may bo gained two advantages ; Eggs aro had in tho winter whon they command tho highest prico and tho lions will bo tho first lo sot in tho spring just whon tho good houso-wifo or professional poultry kcopcr, is most anxious to have tho lions do just that thing. liens which have passed tho ages of usefulness and thoso which put off moulting into cold wcathor, should bo sold as soon as the facts aro known. Thero is no profit in such: let them go. To all who renew their subscription to this olllco direct for ono year, on or beforo November 1st, wo will ecikI free a copy of "How to toll tho ago of a Horse." This is a valuable work.
