"When the Grange permits elements of discord to prevail it makes success impossible. Peace and harmony -will win where jeal ousies cannot. The Farmer has stood for ton years doing all that was possible to secure harmony. No word it has ever uttered can be quoted as unfaithful or over unwise. It has wondered why somethings were done and why some things were not done, but has added no fuel to tho flames. It is a good cause vq honotly Beliove, and its principles aro open to all the world. All tho sc- cresy in it is merely to gie it character and to exclude the unworthy. Its prin ciples aro sound and for tho benefit of producers all through the nation Success for the CTrange means prosper ity for Uio farmer. Ueliviong this sin cerely and being enlisted to serve far mers, we hope to seo the Grange prosper. ' fyht $iari; Te.v yeaus ago, when the Grange was orfrnnizod, they needed a newspaper and finding the Willamette Farmer well established they gave it support. Tho rule worked both, ways ns tho Farmer supported the Grange. So far as possi ble we have stood by tho Grange and we have no doubt that it will stay with the Farmer until we fail to deserve confi dence. Wo hear that several papers wish to bo recognised ns the official organ but we have no doubt that the State Grange will always stand by its bet friend and support the journal that shows the most ability to serve it, as well as the most ability generally. Tho Farmer has no doubt of its ability to hold its own. ORANGE NOTES. How to make the Grange answer tho groat purpose of its foundeia is a ques tion of no small impoitance. The founders were gentlemen connected with the agricultural department at "Washing ton. The first mover, O. H. Kelly, was travelling in South Carolina, soon after the war, and was struck with the deplor able condition of those who tilled the soil. It was plain to lu3 mind that tho agricultural interests of the whole nation suffered for want of union and h.umony So he and others, live in all, studied the matter and after framing a system, un dertook to get farmers to organise under it. This scheme was very suc cessful and yet maintains itself with re markable growth. It is renewing its strength so rapjdly that it will soon rep resent the agriculture of the nation. - To make-the order of Patrons of Hiii- r - bandry, commonly known as the Grange, aa influential as it deserves to be, iumiet command the confidenco of all farmers. It must show good' judgment and bo of use not only to its own members but to fanners throughout the country. Many expected too much and being disap pointed went to the extreme of condemn ing and withdrawing. They Fhould have remained to correct errors and con quer difficulties They did not .how courage or even dinCietion. The same has occurred elrewliere, but the Grange there outlived errors and trouble, and became strong and iroi.H;nU'. So it can and ought to le here, if our far mers would stand up to their colors and right it out if it taken many a cummer. You may prefer tunic other plan to the; Grange, but we have that and if all will take hold to make it a i-nct'ei it can answer the puqiose and naturally 1 twill the agriculture (if the country. When farmers ran co-ojtfrate they can run' thirtg.alout a they pleav. j Tin: Grange has had tho use of this journal without expense and is welcome to all it can do. AVe have thought, some times, that tho Grange organ is entitled to know and publish Grange informa tion; we certainly should if the State Grange secretary thought fit to furnish it to us. Our ability to serve the Grange is limited by our ability to acquire Grango news. When tho Order is free of certain Smnll-souled influences that are jealous of any one who does not follow in their wake, it will be stronger and more successful. As we are a high private and never care to be anything but a worker, we take the privilege to lecture free. If the Grange expects to thrive and increase it must have the right marl at jts'head. Judge Boise has worked faith fully and well but his term is nearly out. We must elect a if aster in his place foar months from now. That man must be a' practical farmer and a true representa tive of Oiogon farmers. It is not easy to replace (he present master, who loves the farm better than the bench, but we have actual fanners who aro capable of representing us anywhere. It is a posi tion that requires self-sacrifice to per form its duties faithfully. We have had able men, who aro farmer-, in that position and can always hae them. Tho Grange has plenty of the bet kind of talent. Tho everyday, working, sound-hearted order of genius that suc ceeds on the farm can succeed anywhcie ele. Tiio-sk wno read tho interesting letter of State Grange Lcctnicr, Dro. II. K. Hayes, in Inst week's Farmer, must con fess that the Older has one good worker who deserves to bo respected, lie made those joui neys in bad weather and en countered actual hardships to fill bis appointments. He takes a great inteiot in the woik and there is no other man who can do his work bettor if as well. It does seem as if such a coii.se, lepre- sented by such a maii must possess great qualities. So it does, but we mutt rec ognize that humanity is wanting in con fidence and that great bodies' mow slowly. It in certain that the Grango will grow and spread here as it does in the East, and after awhile reach every farming community in the Pacific Northwest. Theic is no country that more needs the benefits it can bring and no man better able to make its benefits Known ami Kit than slate Lecturer JX, E. Haye.-. ' ' ' How to Treat Bees. 'Milwaukie, Or., Jan. 4, 1SS1. Elitor Willamette liin r: I am glad to" seo that tho columns of your valuable paper contain so many valuable hints to fanners on their differ ent crops and tho various ways of mak ing a living. It is true, as you saj-J mixed husbandry is the surest way to success. One of tho fanner's crops is .sure to go to waste if ho expects to gather it himself, or his hired help cither that is the honey crop. For this crop to bo gathered you want tho best bees you can find, then put them on amoveablo fraino hive and supply them with plenty of F. D. X., and n smoker to subdue the bees with. Put in an hour now and then with tho bees, and you will soon learn that yon are well paid for your trouble in tho way of profits as well as plcasuie. Breeders ha e learned, too, that they can rear cheap queens ; L, too, will raiso dol lar queens tho coming season. I have reared some fine dollar queens ; they aro reared from my best stock, but reared in the way all cheap queens are reared, I will bay I, shall spare no pains to have them of the highest typo that can bo pro duced by artificial q'uoen raising. I ex pect to send out queens at different pri ces, some as low as 23 cents, but do not expect to have a supply of these, on hand at all times, but will send by mail, post paid, on receipt of 23 centu, at any time that I may have them on hand. They would bo an excellent thing to practice on by new beginners, and in fact ono should learn to change the queens of two colonics. This would give us prac tice, that when we recoived a valuable queen wo can introduco hor without loss. All bee keepers want to know how to raiso queens, and it is important that they should, as queen rearing is one of the most interesting studios connected with bee-keeping. Having had some experience in this branch of the apiary, one of the plans I uso may not come amiss hero, Twill pick out a strong col ony of blacks, will make it quoenless, let it make queen cells, destroy them, and givo them worker eggs, of the Italian queen wish to loar from these eggs should be in a rough comb, or you may cut holes in. it among the eggs, or tako anl empty comb, partly built (a now comb), set it in the center of the broad nest of the Italian colony one day after you have made the black one quoenless. then the eggs will bo just tho right ago at the end of tho third day. These eggs aro two days old, and bejng all in worker size cells, I now trim tho lower part of tho comb oft" up to where there aro some eggs, now place it in tho qyeenles col ony, maik the date, for just eight days from the time you give them tho oggs they will have them heaped over (or sealed up) ; now cut them out aild graft them in other combs of the tamehhc that the bees may fasten them securely j say about tho tenth day you are ready to form a nucleus; this is done by taking one of these with capped queen cell se curely fastened; place it in an empty hive, till out with empty comb, movo a strong colony in the middle of the day when the bees aro in the field, placo the empty hivo in its stead, the field bees will come and take caro of the queen cell, it will hatch in about fijjm five to seven days after ling sealed maybe not quite so soon, but it is well to keep a close look after them. Fse of liee smokers. Mafceor buy one and you will be surprised at tho apparent improvement in yourliees. Our bees had a merry Ohiihtmas and are doins well. Ilespectfully, J. D. Rusk.
