Wheat is advancing with evory proba bility that before Christmas it will bring a dollar a bushel, which is the sum of an Oregon farmers' hopes. Our readers will award us tho credit for having triveii them steady aurnnco of an im pioving market for breadstuff's. We have no desire to undervalue our con temporaries or to deprecia'e tho motives of other journal-, but it is certainly true that the Wiilvmf.tti: I Anjinn lias stood alone before the lieople in ii-erting the probabilities of the grain market and in encouraging wheat giowers to put faith in those probabilities. Our object is to show the coni-tcnt cour-e of this paper since it camo under our own control. By its aid tho farm eis of our region have been benefited to the extent of hundreds of thousands of dollais in a single year, and have always been able to rely on our statements and market leports. Our forecast of markets has only failed once of being correct leadings of tho future. Even then wo were correct in our estimates, only tho whole world vv as mistaken. The surplus product of wheat in California in 18S0 suipnsscd all expectation and overthrow all calculations. AVe showed, that enough tonnage was coming if the sur plus was 000,000 tons, us all authorities had accepted, but on tho 2:td of Jnnua ly, 1882, the vvoild was nitonished to le.u n that the surplus of California was twenty millions of bushels greater than was supposed. The immcns.e surplus that actually developed, nroko the wheat market and sent freighfs up to exorbi tant liguie-'. Wo then failed to read the futnre but eeitainly were not to blame. Take the ten yoais since 187:1, however, and in the main the F.viiMi.n has succe---fully read tho feigns of the times and placed facts befoie piuduceis in a man ner to lie of immense advantage totliem. Jo claim to know the wheat market in advanco would bo absuid, tio mortal m know it. V only claim to have stimuli the situation carefully anil have placed factH before readeis so that the producer has boon able to draw coriect conclusions. Mr. John Wiles faun- hugely in Ben ton county. When some years ago, we visited him, he said he found our infor mation of great value in making sales of wheat. He and a neighbor held Mveral thousand bu-hels of whoat one year until May. When he read in our re ports that the market was likely to drop, Im advised his partner to sell. The other thought he would get more and did not like to sell at 1.021, so they held until June and sold for 02 cents. Mr. Mcl'hillips, of MeMinnville.once told us that ho followed our advice with regard to sellingwlieatandthatwhe.it buyers, after ridiculing tho Faiisier'h good advice, finally camo up to our liguies. On the load to Walla Walla, a weok ago, Mr. ltoc.se, a merchant of Westou, Umatilla county, spoke very pleasantly of the lidelity of the Fakmku to tho whoat growing interest. He said the paper pievented bis buying wheat as farmers redd our reports and say "Clarke says we'll have a better market by and by." Another meichant from tho Upper Country gave us quite a hum orous description of the coining of tho mail with the l'uiMi.ii,when a sub-eriber would be surioundod by other.- inquir ing the news. One of the-e Up Country biisine-s men tho other day asked, sharply, "Do the wheat-growers of the countiy appre ciate what you do for them in your study of the markets?" Our answer was ''Some of them do." We might have an sweied, "thousands do not." If they did instead of gathering around the subscrib er all wouiii tio suoscrioers, anil neip to .-uppoit the mini who woiks for them against the woild. Last summer, we met at Spokano Falls,, Mr. J. X. Barker, formeily of Douglas county. He had been two years there and renewed his suh-cmuion on meeting us. He said to a friend that he bad taken the Fakmku ten year in Douglas county and he and his neighbors followed its market advices to their profit. Some took other papers and went by them, but the difference was thousands of dollars in favor of tho-e who put faith in tho Farmer. Under these circumstances it would seem the most natural thing possible for the farmers of all this country to gladly suppoit a farm journal devoted to their interests which has so successfully, for Commission Merchants.
