Winter is passing away without any disa greeable extremes. The sun's low range per mits fogs and mists to rise, and tho morning air is sometimes very raw and not agreeable, but wo liavo bright days when sunshine in spires man and naturo nliko. Farmers are at work, and wo hear from East of tho Moun tains that plowing is going on in some loca tions. All the world hero is preparing for a great business year, and Portland rides on a wave of prosperity. Shipping is abundant, and as cheap as it possibly can bo forced to tako freight!-. Bather than take less tho owrera prefer to wait six months and tako chances with the new crop. Wheat is becoming so small in tulk remaining in this Statu that exporters count tho year's work as about completed pow. Mills have a certain quantity in store to grind from, and will need a few vessels to take their flour. Exporters will leave very faw cargoes more to ship away. The total fhlpment of the preseut harvest year will nly amount to five-eighths of the shipments (or the year previous, to wit i 10,000 tons gainst 200,000 tons. The falling off is due tx the total failure of the spring-sown grain JCast of the Cascades and the light yield of the same in Western Oregon. Ih'o English pneo remains without material hangr, but the reduotion in freights puts the price up materially. Salem mills were pay. ing P2J cents on Monday, They will have to pay a dollar soon if they get wheat. If the quantity in farmer's hands it not larger than has been intimated, it will all be required for the local demand after the fhipping season is ended. The local requirements constantly Increase, and after the completion of the N. 1', H. 11. next leason, that demand will be ex tended to Dikota. It is safe to say that the malt quantity yet in farmers' home bins will all be wanted at gobd prices, prices that will b no criterion for the future of theat market. The millers through the Stato will need the wheat, and will prefer to pay a rouud price (or it, because that will le their excuse fir doubling up on their customers. "A wont to the wise Is mflicient." Tl e farmrr with a few hundred bushels of wheat iu his bin can hold oo until June, unless the price shall suit him in May, That astonishing State, California, begins the )car Hlth the followuij estimate i The produce Exchange has issued an rati mate of the flour and giaiu remaimug in the State on Jan. Our rates are governed by an over anpply. More ships came than we knew of, and the wheat surplus was greatly less than was anti cipated. All the world from the country on the whole coast tells of immense crops in pros pect. It is really too early to predict or even calculate on the coming harvest. It is true, however, that there is a large extent of wheat growing in all directions, and it looks remark ably well. Eifct of the Cascades they have havo had a succefsful growth on fall-town wheat, and it looks fair to ield very well. The same can be said equally of this region of country. Stock of all kinds aro wintering finely. No feed has bacn ismed to large herds or flecks, and the growth and quality of wool will be remarkable So far as appearances go tho farmers have good crops t' expect, that is all. If every farmer would figure up this winter the aihantaircs to be dcrmdlrom Hotter woris and more thorough cultivation, the protit .nioht bo considerable. What we shouldcomt to is good judgment and thorough work farminc. and then the "failure of crops" v. oi in ould bear a small proportion to the general average. We talk elsewhere of the value of barn yard manure, and wish our readers could all under land its value in the "Commercial" column. During the week the wheat market here has become firmer in respond to a better feeling in English ma. kcts, and firmness in New York and San Francisco. Saks have been made abovo 81.76 per cental, and $1.7SJ is a fair nnntntinn for vallev wheat. Salem mills are giving 02J cts. Boston Wool Market.) !,.-. r.n If.
