An ingenious correspondent of tlio Scientific Atmri ciiii has discovered a new'guage for mcnsuiing men's character-) by the manner in which they open and -hut doors. Out of 1,000 persons recouled, 035 opened tho door and shut it eaie fully, when they emtio in and when they went out, without much noi-e; '2-lii opened it in a hurry, and made an attempt to shut it, but did not, and merely pulled it to w lien they w cut out: 302 did not attempt to shut it at all either on comlii"; in or going out; IKS left it open when they came In, but when reminded of the fact, nindeamplo apology, and shut it when they went out: 102 opeiied it In a great hutry and slummed it violently, but left it open when they went out; 20 came in with "How do you do, sir V" or "good morn ing!" or "Good evening, sii!" and till these went through tho operation of wiping their feet on the mat, but did not shut tho door when they went in or when they came out. Wo have employed men out of all theso classes, and during that time have had an op portunity of judging of their merits. The first class ol 335 were those w ho knew their trado and commenced and finished their work in a methodical manner; were quiet and had littlo to say in their working hours, and were well approved by those for whom they did their woik. They were punctual to time, and left nothing undone which they were ordered to do. They did not complain about tritles and in all re spects they were reliable men, aud wcie kind and obliging in their goner al conduct. The VniTi'i; or Pi,i:nty or Si.i:i:r. A medical fiiend says: "Ono man may do with less sleep than another; but, as a general rule, if you want a clerk, a lieutenant, a lawyer, a physi cian, a legislator, a judge, a president or a pastor, do not ti list your interests to any man who does not take on tho average eight good solid hours' sleep out of the twenty-four. Whatever may bo the reason lor it, if he dees not give himself that, he will snau some time jiM when you want him to bo strong." Good, sweet, sound sloop, "airy-light, from pure digestion bred," is nature's true eye-opener, and for phy-ical vigor is the only sure tonic and preparation. Those who pay court to Soninus are seldom found in tho halls ot Uacehus. Glowingjeheeks and ambrosial locks arc the gilts of Hebo to those who lave an early pillow. To morrow's labors demand tho vigorous life which comes from solid forgetful ness and the dreamiest inactivity. Good sleep cities sleepiness and sleepy headaches. Tako our fill of the puro article. The Agiicultural Department at Washington litis lerelved moio than it-sham of criticism, not to say abuse and vituperation. As a very quiet re ply to the host of its detractors tho de partment may "point witli pride" to its exhibit at the Centennial Exposition at FMladelpliia. it is without doubt tno most valuable exhibit to farmers in the whole collection. Tho labor involved in it- prepatation has been immense, and tho skill and judgment with which the work has beenpieformed is worthy of the highe-t credit. It is only to be regretted that so u-seful a collection should bo entombed at Washington wheio so few farmers can examine and study it. Those w ho can pos-ibly view it at Philadelphia should not miss do ing -o and making copious notes for iuture reference. It is gathered in tho government building. fJT" One nJJon if enonsh f ir one hundred to two hun1redShuep,ccorduii to their se, rtrenKlb, and fondlllon. IttaputnpU FIVE-GALiON CANS-Prlce. A good illustration of tho manner in which many Americans recognise, while pretending to ignore social con ditions in leligious matters Is afforded by the story of ono of our former sex tons, At a brilliant church wedding -omeof tho u-hers showed snino very worty but socially ob-curo people into good seats in the niiddlo aisle. As soon as he di-cocred It the pompous sexton hastened to tlio uslier and ex claimed, "Did you give the s that seat?" "Ye-." "What on earth did you do that for?
