October 5, 2016 The Skanner Page 15 Bids & Classii ed Advertising deadlines 12:00 Noon Monday Hours: Monday - Friday 8:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. Divided cont’d from pg 9 Donald. • Rosario Dawson trav- els to Flint, Michigan, to probe how the gov- ernment poisoned its own citizens, a mostly African-American un- derclass. • “Grey’s Anatomy” star Jesse Williams heads to St. Petersburg, Flor- ida, where he i nds an educational and criminal-justice divide resulting from what some call “re-segrega- tion.” • America Ferrera, whose parents and sib- lings emigrated from Honduras, travels to Texas’ Rio Grande Val- ley to report on the plight of Central Amer- ican refugees. • Zach Galii anakis ex- amines the nation’s deepening political divisions as evidenced in his native state of North Carolina. • Amy Poehler ventures into the world of the invisible immigrant women who help keep the California econ- omy al oat: domestic workers. • And Peter Sarsgaard looks at the addiction crisis in Dayton, Ohio, where the shuttering of America’s factories and rampant unem- ployment exemplii es a heartland epidemic of drug- and alcohol-re- lated deaths. However unsettling, each story stands as more than a cry of distress. The narratives not only expose wrong-doers and bear witness to victims, but also highlight dedi- cated reformers. In Lear’s housing seg- ment, viewers meet Fred Freiberg, executive di- rector of New York’s Fair Housing Justice Center, which l ush- es out discriminatory housing practices, then sues the of enders. It is Freiberg’s agency that dispatches Lear and his African-American coun- terpart on their land- lord-busting mission. “With every story, we tried to show causes of inequality and the im- pacts of inequality, but we also tried to provide models of social action,” says Solly Granatstein, a creator of the “America Divided” series. “We try to show that there are solutions and there is work being done, that it’s not just simply a prob- lem.” For the series, Granat- stein, a nine-time Em- my-winning former producer at ABC News, NBC News and CBS’ “60 Minutes,” joined forces with Richard Rowley, whose credits include the 2013 Oscar-nominat- ed documentary “Dirty Wars,” and Lucian Read, with whom Granatstein teamed on their previous docuseries, “Years of Liv- ing Dangerously,” which addressed the threat of climate change.
