At the same time, it is important to note that, except for his irst two years, which were a missed opportunity, President Obama faced rabid opposition from the Republicans. Indeed, as soon as he took oice, Senator Mitch McCon- nell announced that his top priority was to deny President Obama a sec- ond term. The president did introduce a jobs bill that could not clear Con- gress. The Republicans simply would not work with him. I don’t know how many of the record conversations I’ve had with African-American leaders who would not be quoted and refused to make their sentiments public. It is our primary goal as a labor union to better the lives of all people working in the building trades through advocacy, civil demonstration, and the long-held belief that workers deserve a “family wage” - fair pay for an honest day’s work. A family wage, and the beneits that go with it, not only strengthens families, but also allows our communities to become stronger, more cohesive, and more responsive to their citizens’ needs. Our family wage agenda relects our commitment to people working in the building trades, and to workers everywhere. In this small way, we are doing our part to help people achieve the American Dream. This dream that workers can hold dear regardless of race, color, national origin, gender, creed, or religious beliefs.
