That’s because it’s a stand-alone prequel which doesn’t revolve around the Lamberts, the family haunt- ed by ghosts in the previous installments. The best news of all is that, despite being rated only PG-13, this harrowing adventure was still scary enough to teach me I can scream louder than my wife! Guaranteed to have you jumping out of your skin, “Insidious 3” is a cine- matic throwback evocative of an earlier era — when horror-flick filmmakers cared more about subtly sowing the seeds of sus- pense instead of simply splattering the screen with gruesome slasher fare. The film again features Lin Shaye (“There’s Some- thing about Mary”) as Elise Rainier, the gifted psychic with an uncanny ability to commune with the afterlife. Police Story: Lockdown (Unrated) Jackie Chan stars in this crime thriller, set in Beijing, as a police captain who will stop at nothing to save the long-lost daughter (Jing Tian) he hasn’t seen in years. Support cast includes Ye Liu, Yiwei Liu,Tao Yin and Wei Na. (In Mandarin with subtitles) Patch Town (Unrated) Sci-fi fantasy about a toy (Rob Ramsay) who, after being abandoned by the mother who’d adopted him, decides to confront the evil corporation that manufac- tured him . Featuring Zoie Palmer, Julian Richings and Scott Thompson. A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence (PG-13 for dis- turbing images and brief sexuality) Episodic absur- dist comedy revolving concerned about her wel- fare. Nevertheless, ghostly activities escalate to the point where Elise finally agrees to get involved and stage a showdown of a séance. Sure, the storyline might read like stock fright fare but trust me, “Insidious 3” is one of those expertly- edited horror flicks that repeatedly shocks you when least expected.
