Portland and SW Washington S T L I G H T S Black history month at Legacy health Watch the classic Oregon Public Broad- casting documentary, “Local Color,” at Legacy Health, Feb. 13, from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.; and Feb. 18, from 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. at Legacy Emanuel’s Lorenzen Con- ference Center Auditorium, 2801 N Gantenbein Ave., Portland. The documentary chronicles the history of African American in Oregon, including the fight for civil rights and equality by both black and white citizens. It inspires and encourages us all as we watch the commu- nity unite and take a stand to bring about important changes. It’s a moving story of people, both black and white, who worked for civil rights, there are also moments of inspiration and courage as people take a stand to bring about important change for their communi- ty. O O Black history, Retold by youths the Black Portlanders Grows – with your help C P Roosevelt high school students’ seminal Black history project focusing on Portland’s own civil rights icons – our local ‘Freedom Riders’ — is on display at the Oregon historical society’s free family day this weekend. Nearly 100 Roosevelt freshmen interviewed local civil rights activists to compile the professional exhibit, which tours the state then heads for our nation’s capital. the project uses students as exhibit docents to explain the historic record and engage viewers.
