Local News COMMUNITY NEWS BRIEFS Black History 101 Mobile Museum Goes on Display Jan. 16 Connect Volunteers with Community Needs The traveling exhibit explores history through memorabilia that spans from slav- ery to Hip Hop. The PPS Focus on Diversity Film and Lecture Series is bringing to PPS students, teachers, staff and community members the Black History 101 Mobile Museum. The innovative exhibit features 5,000 arti- facts, including documents from Black leaders who helped shape the United States. The exhibit will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Jan. 16 for students and from 4:30 to 8 p.m. for families and community mem- bers. The exhibit will be temporarily housed at Jefferson High School. Khalid el-Hakim, the founder of the Black History 101 Mobile Museum, will be pres- ent to provide context and discuss the exhibit. Accompanying him will be Dr. Umar Johnson an nationally certified school psychologist who lectures throughout the country. Dr. Umar is a blood relative of abolition- ist and orator Frederick Douglass. He will address some of the educational challenges of Black students and the community as a whole. He is a national expert on learning disabilities and their effects on Black chil- dren, as well as an expert on helping schools and parents modify challenging behaviors that can ultimately lead to disrup- tive behavior disorder diagnoses in Black boys. Volunteerclark.com helps connect county residents with community needs. The web- site, sponsored by Clark County Environ- mental Services, is an easy way for volunteers to find environmental projects or other events that best match their interests and abilities. Upcoming events are listed on the home page. Simply click on Volunteer for an Event to see a complete list of projects and events. Volunteers also can search by loca- tion, date, sponsor’s name or keyword. The powwow will feature drum groups and dancers from across the region, Native American crafts and food, activities for children, and raffle prizes. This event is free and open to the public.
