Black History 101 Mobile
Museum Goes on Display
Jan. 16
Connect Volunteers with
Community Needs
The traveling exhibit explores history
through memorabilia that spans from slav-
ery to Hip Hop.
The PPS Focus on Diversity Film and
Lecture Series is bringing to PPS students,
teachers, staff and community members the
Black History 101 Mobile Museum.
The innovative exhibit features 5,000 arti-
facts, including documents from Black
leaders who helped shape the United States.
The exhibit will be open from 8:30 a.m. to
3:30 p.m. Jan. 16 for students and from 4:30
to 8 p.m. for families and community mem-
bers. The exhibit will be temporarily housed
at Jefferson High School.
Khalid el-Hakim, the founder of the Black
History 101 Mobile Museum, will be pres-
ent to provide context and discuss the
exhibit. Accompanying him will be Dr.
Umar Johnson an nationally certified school
psychologist who lectures throughout the
country.
Dr. Umar is a blood relative of abolition-
ist and orator Frederick Douglass. He will
address some of the educational challenges
of Black students and the community as a
whole. He is a national expert on learning
disabilities and their effects on Black chil-
dren, as well as an expert on helping
schools and parents modify challenging
behaviors that can ultimately lead to disrup-
tive behavior disorder diagnoses in Black
boys.

With the start of a new year, Clark Coun-
ty residents have a new online tool to help
them find volunteer opportunities to serve
their community.
Volunteerclark.com helps connect county
residents with community needs. The web-
site, sponsored by Clark County Environ-
mental Services, is an easy way for
volunteers to find environmental projects or
other events that best match their interests
and abilities.
Upcoming events are listed on the home
page. Simply click on Volunteer for an
Event to see a complete list of projects and
events. Volunteers also can search by loca-
tion, date, sponsor’s name or keyword.
The website also includes Volunteer for
an Organization, where residents can see
organizations seeking volunteers.
“This website is handy for county resi-
dents who want to devote their time, talents
and energy toward improving our commu-
nity,” said Don Benton, Environmental
Services director. “The county is pleased to
provide an easy method for residents to find
volunteer opportunities on a short- or long-
term basis.”

teerclark.com or contact Environmental
Services at 360-397-2121 ext. 4352.
