Local News COMMUNITY NEWS BRIEFS UNCF Town Hall Meeting in Portland Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority & Pink Ivy Foundation Celebration On Tuesday, Nov. 5, the United Negro College Fund hosts a town hall meeting at Self Enhancement Inc., 3920 N. Kerby Ave., at 6 p.m. to address the Portland com- munity about UNCF’s efforts to re-establish its presence in the area. UNCF had a very strong presence in the Portland area from the 1980’s to early 2000’s and hosted an array of successful fundraising events, including the annual Telethon, the Black College Fair, Gospel Concert featuring Tom Grant, UNCF Sun- day in partnership with local churches, and much more. One of the largest events held in Portland was the “UNCF Walk-a-thon.” Although there is currently no physical office in Portland, UNCF administers the UNCF Pacific NW Scholarship Fund, which provides over ten scholarships a year to students from Washington and Oregon to attend UNCF institutions. UNCF currently re-established the Port- land Metro advisory board this year and hopes to increase funding to provide addi- tional scholarships for local students. The Zeta Sigma Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority in partnership with the Pink Ivy Foundation presents the 26th Emerald Awards Banquet on Sunday, Nov. 3, 2-5 p.m., at the Embassy Suites-Portland Airport, 7900 NE 82nd Ave. This year’s theme is “A Step Above the Rest: Men Taking the Road Less Traveled.” We will be honoring African American men who have shown a commitment to serving and improving the quality of life in our community and who have made a signifi- cant impact in the lives of others. All proceeds benefit the Roberta C. Vann Scholarship Fund, which provides scholar- ships to African-American women attending a 4-year college or university. Call 503-380-9493 for more information. C O M Better People, the nonprofit that helps former inmates return to the community, held its annual fundraising walk this weekend in downtown Portland. The group provides re-entry services, and job assistance.
