UNCF Town Hall Meeting in
Portland
Alpha Kappa Alpha
Sorority & Pink Ivy
Foundation Celebration
On Tuesday, Nov. 5, the United Negro
College Fund hosts a town hall meeting at
Self Enhancement Inc., 3920 N. Kerby
Ave., at 6 p.m. to address the Portland com-
munity about UNCF’s efforts to re-establish
its presence in the area.
UNCF had a very strong presence in the
Portland area from the 1980’s to early
2000’s and hosted an array of successful
fundraising events, including the annual
Telethon, the Black College Fair, Gospel
Concert featuring Tom Grant, UNCF Sun-
day in partnership with local churches, and
much more. One of the largest events held
in Portland was the “UNCF Walk-a-thon.”
Although there is currently no physical
office in Portland, UNCF administers the
UNCF Pacific NW Scholarship Fund,
which provides over ten scholarships a year
to students from Washington and Oregon to
attend UNCF institutions.
UNCF currently re-established the Port-
land Metro advisory board this year and
hopes to increase funding to provide addi-
tional scholarships for local students.
To learn more about the local UNCF
office and upcoming events, go to

The Zeta Sigma Omega Chapter of Alpha
Kappa Alpha Sorority in partnership with
the Pink Ivy Foundation presents the 26th
Emerald Awards Banquet on Sunday, Nov.
3, 2-5 p.m., at the Embassy Suites-Portland
Airport, 7900 NE 82nd Ave.
This year’s theme is “A Step Above the
Rest: Men Taking the Road Less Traveled.”
We will be honoring African American men
who have shown a commitment to serving
and improving the quality of life in our
community and who have made a signifi-
cant impact in the lives of others.
All proceeds benefit the Roberta C. Vann
Scholarship Fund, which provides scholar-
ships to African-American women
attending a 4-year college or university.
Call 503-380-9493 for more information.
