Presented by Seattle Art Museum, in collaboration with [storefront] Olson Kundig Architects, Record Store is a space that attempts to remove the barrier between artist and audience, encouraging the community to participate in the curation of this Olson Kundig Architects-designed traveling installation. This social practice project is curated by Seattle Art Museum curator Sandra Jackson-Dumont and inspired by “Theaster Gates: The Listening Room” on view at the Seattle Art Museum through July 1, 2012. “This is one of those projects where the final outcome is unknown— it’s a genuine experiment—but we are intrigued by Sandra’s idea that vinyl records can be a catalyst and tool that people work with in order to understand other narratives and per- spectives,” said Alan Maskin, Principal/Owner at Olson Kundig Architects. “We are also excited by the idea of bringing people together around the culture of vinyl records and record players.” Record Store is currently located at Olson Kundig Architects, 406 Occidental Ave., just off of South Jackson Street—a zone where American soldiers were for- bidden to enter during the World War II era because it was perceived to be “danger- ous” due to the “illicit con- sumption of alcohol.” In real- ity, it was home to black music clubs and hangouts where the Seattle music scene thrived. So, while in truth Record Store is a misnomer—no records are actually for sale—it is a nod to the decades in Seattle’s history when people gathered in Pioneer Square to create and listen to music. ‘Theaster Gates: The Listening Room’ on view at the Seattle Art Museum through July 1, 2012 Theaster Gates’ visit to the emerald City has grown into an homage to vinyl beyond the art museum.
