The commercial and residential sectors in the region dis- pose of over 240,000 tons of organic waste (e.g., all types of food waste including fruits and vegetables, meats, seafood, grains, dairy and bakery waste) and compostable non-recyclable paper (e.g. food-soiled paper, waxed corrugated cardboard) annually. It is esti- mated that approximately 55% of this waste is generated by the commercial sector and 45% from residences. In 2010, the region recovered and composted over 22,500 tons of organic waste (“organics”) from the commercial sector; 17,700 tons of this material was received at Metro Central Transfer Station, referred to as Metro Central Station or MCS.
