Page 2D EUGENE REGISTER-GUARD, Sunday, April 21, 1963 Hope, Ball Frolic in "Critic s Choice" WEISFIELD'S BUY OUT GOODMAN & BADER PIONEER PORTLAND JEWELERS Film Marks 25th Year For Ski-Nosed Comedian Two of the nation's best-known comics Bob Hope and Lucille Ball will team up for their fourth movie together when "Critic's Choice" opens Wednesday at the Fox Theatre in Eugene. For Hope, the movie marks his 25th anniversary in motion pictures i career that has spanned the famous "road" series and such films as "Sorrowful Jones," "Fancy Pants," and one called "Thanks for the Memory." Including "Critic's Choice," Hope has appeared In 44 films. He's currently working on plans for three more. Miss Ball previously starred with Hope in "Facts of Life," "Fancy Pants" and "Sorrowful Jones." And she's known also, of course, as the heroine of a television series and as president of Desilu Studios. Both Hope and Miss Ball have had their share of slapstick roles but not so in "Critic's Choice." This movie depends more on situation comedy and witty lines for its humor. Hope is cast as a New York City drama critic, who works for one of the city's largest newspapers. Miss Ball, as his wife, comes from a zany family and after her husband has numerous encounters with would-be playwriters, decides to write a play herself. Well, she finds a producer g handsome, lady-killer type, portrayed by Rip Torn and financial backing. But moral sup port from her husband? No, his ego's been bruised. And so his wife heads to Boston for the try outs and hubby sulks and cavorts with former wife Ivy, portrayed by Marilyn Maxwell until opening night approaches in New York. Besides the two top stars, Torn and Miss Maxwell, the movie features a veteran cast. Jessie Royce Landis, is cast as Miss Ball's mother. Jim Backus, many-voiced actor, has another characcr role, and Ricky Xelman, aged 12, portrays the critic's son. And there's an ob vious reason why young Ricky got the part his "ski-nose" closely resembles Hope's. ' Cottage Grove, and an estimated 800 of Its residents during .the mid-19205 are featured in part of "The Great Chase," now playing at the McDonald Theatre. "The Great Chase" is composed of excrpts from old silent films including "Tho General," featuring comedian Buster Keaton. Jerry Endicott of 640 Irvington Dr., Eugene, said he was a resident of the Emerald Empire at the time the movie was made about 1026 or 1027, he thinks. "The General," Endicott said, was one of the first motion pictures to be filmed in Oregon. The film company, he con tinued, picked a site In the Row River area of Cottage Grove, and hired hundreds of the area residents to serve as extras. Keaton, he said, was cast as the engineer of "The General," a locomotive. The movie had a Civil War theme, and, naturally, a chase the Confederate Army pursuing the Union Army. Endicott, now a film projectionist for the McDonald, said he thought he recognized the area In the film sequences from the "trailer," the short used to advertise the film. He was sure of the location, he said, during the first showing of the film. This Week at the U of O This Week At Local Theaters rox Ending Tuesday, "The Mir acle Worker" and "Blrdman of Al catriz."
