They are Joseph Rosoto. 39, and John Vlahovich, 31, both commercial fishermen, and Donald Franklin, 34, a boilermaker. Simpson was shot to death at 3 a.m., shortly after the closing of his bar, and his wue, rern, was seriously wounaeo in Doth arms. The state contended that Siimpson was killed to elim inate him as a witness in a forthcoming trial of Rosoto for the armed robbery of the South Seas two years be- tore. Rosoto was acquitted of me robbery charge, but con victed of murder. The scheduled quadruple execution comes as the Cali fornia Legislature is engaged in another bitter, biennial debate over a moratorium on capital punishment. Toe lawmakers, who re jected such a moratorium three years ago in drama tic special session shortly before the execution of Caryl Chessman, are rather closely aiviaea on tne question. USE THE W A N T A D FOR R O F I T and R E S U L T S By RALPH DIGHTON Of the Associated Press EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. Bo!a the Air Force and the Navy will be watching closely when an ex perimental plane with a "breath ing wing" begins flight tests here late this month. The Air Force is interested because it footed the bill $30 million tor the radical X21. de signed to show how planes 'can fly 90 per cent farther on a given amount of fuel. Tne Navy has a secret inter est: How to apply the same prin ciple to underwater vehicles, in creasing their range and per haps their speed. i The Navy won't admit it has an interest in the X21, but in formed sources gay experiments arc under way with this method of reducing the turbulence that builds up around bodies moving in either air or water. Turbulence drags at movine objects. The faster the object moves, the more turbulence. To overcome it, the. object has to expend an increasingly greater amount of energy in the form of fuel. A design that reduces turbu lence wiU enable an air or water vehicle (1) to go farther on a given load of fuel, (2) carry a heavier payload the gam dis tance, or (3) use smaller, cheaper engine. Northrop Corp.'s Norair Di vision, the only U.S. firm con- and rear propsrgr Usee tsxeept No. 1434 AarU at, IMt. Radical X21 Design 'Breathing Wing' Plane To Begin Test Flights ducting a major research pro gram in this field, has been ex perimenting with turbulence control since 1949. The result is the X21, with a slotted wing full of tubes and channels that suck away the turbulence as it forms. Turbulence occurs in an ex tremely thin boundary layer next to the surface of the mov ing body. At the leading edge the layer is only a few thous andths of an inch. Then, as the molecules of air or water sweep past the vehicle. they are kicked outward by im pact with its surface. In the air the result is thousands of tiny tornadoes; in the water, bub bling miniature whirlpools. Tornadoes or whirlpools drag at the moving object Northrop'a answer was to cut hairline slots the length of the X21'g wing. Compressors car ried in a -pod under each wing create a suction through tubes connected to the slots. The tiny tornadoes are drawn from the wings and expelled to the rear of the plane. This system, Northrop says, eliminates about 40 per cent of the total drag on an airplane. The X21s are modified BM bombers, with the engines moved from the wings to the after end of the fuselage to give more room for slotting. The wing span has been increased from 72 to 93 feet to prove the designers' . contention that lift can be increased without in creasing drag. "Boundary layer control is primarily for long range planes," says a company spokes man. "It is not intended for fighters because of the extra weight of the compressors and ducting. Only in steady flight cruises will the reduction in tur-b-Tlence have time to pay off." Obvious applications include tne top-secret Dromedary proj ect, a proposed aircraft that could stay aloft several days on constant alert or fly long dis tances to launch missiles from altitudes too low for radar de tecUoa. Not go obvious are the appli cations to underwater warfare. Slotted surfaces might enable torpedoes to utilize rocket pow er, now denied because at ex treme speeds underwater turbu lence beeoarsea great etmijrk ta direct Use) torpedo's cntjrsc. It's the most sought after, often bought, eagerly consumed, intensely depended upon product in the world. The reason is obvious. We can't do without it. The need to know about the news and events that touch and shape our lives is deep, intense, unending. And the need to know is now. Today.
