Uu.itley turns to the caliber and attitude of the men in volved during the half-hour pro gram, entitled "Underground Sentries." There is an interest ing account of the scries of checks that eliminate personal as well as physical errors or failures. Particularly impressing is the "Versa System," a device through which t h e missile "names" the error itself. Bauer of 111 Bauer Lane, tu- gene, and Mrs. Clifton Ellis 1590 Mavwood Ave., Eugene, called the Onion Editor to report blooming camellias. Mrs. Bauer said her camellia bush has been in bloom since Dec. 10. It now has seven blooms. The bush, she said, usually blooms early. Mrs. Ellis said the bush in her yard, "an odd ball plant," had seven flowers. Both gardeners protected their bushes during the recent cold spells. Western Series Debuts With Sneers, Grimaces By RICK DU BROW or the United Press International HOLLYWOOD Every so often, a new series come along that makes you sit up and take notice. ABC-TV's "The Dako tas," which had its premiere Monday night, is definitely not such a show. It is, of course, a one-hour Western, and it is replacing Cheyenne," which had to pack up after eight years because its star, Clint Walker, decided it was time to leave. This informa tion came as a particular shock to those viewers who never knew he was there in the first place. In the new (new?) series, ac cording to ABC, "a U.S. mar shal and his three deputies pa trol the Dakota Territory, chal lenging all those who would vio late its laws and threaten its peace." The names of these four hard ies are Larcy Ward, Jack Elam, Chad (Chad?) Everett and Mike Greene. And except for Elam's homely kisser, the program is as unconscious of novelty as a do-gooder o.n the warpath is of dignity. It is my personal opinion that Mickey Rooney could polish off the whole quartet with a water pistol. It is nothing less than painful to recite the gruesome details of Monday night's story, but we are pledged to fair and con structive criticism. In brief, Elam, who portrays an ex-gun-fighter, tries to avenge a friend's death, and kills an un armed youth in a wild exchange of gun fire with a gang. Actually (it becomes more painful), the youth is a bad one, all right, but his gun is missing, which puts Elam on the spot. After the usual stuff angry townspeople, threatened hang ing, trigger-happy young deputy it turns out the sheriff is the culprit who hid the key weapon because he was jealous of his old gunfighting friend, Elam. Keen-eyed viewers will note that "The Dakotas" introduces yet another Western series with a quartet of heroes. They will be hard-pressed, however, to note many signs of acting. Mon day night there was more sneer ing and grimacing; than at an office party. Ward, by the way, is also a writer. And in a recent inter view he said, "When you're too old to sit on a horse, you can go back to writing." Yeah. In sum, the only way "The Dakotas" could go more down hill would be to have Mel Allen call it. NEW YORK Television writ ing or much of it has re-1 solved itself into a series of scenes and bits of dialogue which are a sort of a secret code between the authors and audiences. Just a line here or a camera shot there and the audience picks up the clue and is pre pared for the next development. There's the shot of the well dressed wife, mixing herself a drink at the well-stocked bar of the lonely, lavish living room. Aha, you say, she's lonely, bored. with an alcohol problem and her husband is either concen trating too much on his busi ness or his secretary. There s serious-illness gambit: The character coughs a bit, and somebody else says, "what s the matter. Jimmy? Aren't you go ing to do something about that cough?" In television land, no one ever coughs or develops a splitting headache unless it sub sequently turns into somctning big. We know, too, that when the old lady or the hero is arrested and promptly confesses, that somebody else did it somebody to be protected. It's a sure bet that the older, mysterious stranger will turn out to be the heroine's long-lost, ne'er-do-well father. If the hero's fingerprints are all over the poker, the bookend or the gun, it's a cinch to deduce he was framed. There are also some comfy, familiar lines which can be thrown in: "John what has happened to ns, to our marriage?" "Doctor you've got to do something. She's all I have in the world." "I'll call the police. You try to get some rest." "I don't know how it got here. I always kept it loaded in the drawer of my desk." There are hundreds of more all traditional situations and lines. But wouldn't we be lost without them? CBS will have another talk with former President Dwight D. Eisenhower an hour-long inter view by Walter Cronkite to be shown Wednesday, Jan. 23.
