EUGENE REG ISTEH-GU ARD, Thur., Not. 1, lflfia Pi 9B Community College Enrollment Up 38 Oregon's community college system, incorporating vocational-technical schools, is boasting a 38 per cent enrollment in crease this year over last year. Figures released by the State Dept. of Education Wednesday indicate a total fall enrollment of 9,842 compared with 7,137 last fall. Of the three types of enroll ment, the category combining Douglas County College District Meeting Topic SALEM (UPD The State Board nf Education meets in Astoria Friday and will consider crea tion of a community college dis trict in Douglas County. The proposed district would take in all school districts in the county except Reedsport Union High. An election would be neces sary if the board approves the proposed district. The board also will: Consider a revised school district reorganization plan from Jackson County which would merge the Phoenix district with Medford. Recommend that the state's migrant education sum mer program be expanded, with the appropriation enlarged from $50,000 to 560,000 for a two year period, and made con tinuous. Consider agreements with nine schools for migrant educa tion programs in the regular school year this year. The schools are at Pioneer, Wood burn, St. Paul, North Marion, North Plains, Adrian, Vale, Culver and Hood River. Consider an application for federal funds to conduct a pilot science youth program, of fering youngsters a chance to meet with scientists, mathema ticians and engineers. The state would be divided into 27 re gions, with students from 1.400 schools invited to take part. Community College Dedication Friday ASTORIA un The Clatsop Community College, operating in the former Astoria High School building, will be dedi cated Friday. The building has been re modeled at a cost of $233,000 for the two-year college. Leon P. Minear, state super intendent of public instruction, is to deliver the main address at the ceremony. vocational extension (evening) classes and general education still dominates. There are 6,832 students in this grj'ip. The other two cate gories md their enrollments arc college transfer 945, and vocational-technical 2,065. Last fall the enrollment by categories was vocational exten sion and general education 4. 838, vocational technical 1,694, and college transfer 605. These figures incorporate the enrollments of nine institutions classed as community colleges or vocational-technical schools. Eugene Technical-Vocational school is one of these. It has 918 students this fall compared with 773 a year ago. Comparative figures for the other eight schools follow: Blue Mountain Community College in Pendleton, 296 this fall, 250 last fall. Central Oregon College in Bend, 469 this fall, 457 last fall. Clatsop County Community College in Astoria, 530 this fall, 417 last fall. Oregon City Vocational Technical School, 135 this fall. The school did not come within the community college law last year. Portland Community Col lege, 5,822 this fall, 4,178 last fall. Salem Technical-Vocational School, 788 this fall, 565 last fall. Southwestern Oregon Com munity College at North Bend and Coos Bay, 788 this year. 497 last fall. Treasure Valley Commu nity College in Ontario, 248 this fall. The school is new this year.
