SALEM (UPD The State Board
nf Education meets in Astoria
Friday and will consider crea
tion of a community college dis
trict in Douglas County.
The proposed district would
take in all school districts in
the county except Reedsport
Union High.
An election would be neces
sary if the board approves the
proposed district.
The board also will:
Consider a revised school
district reorganization plan from
Jackson County which would
merge the Phoenix district with
Medford.
Recommend that the
state's migrant education sum
mer program be expanded, with
the appropriation enlarged
from $50,000 to 560,000 for a
two year period, and made con
tinuous. Consider agreements with
nine schools for migrant educa
tion programs in the regular
school year this year. The
schools are at Pioneer, Wood
burn, St. Paul, North Marion,
North Plains, Adrian, Vale,
Culver and Hood River.
Consider an application
for federal funds to conduct a
pilot science youth program, of
fering youngsters a chance to
meet with scientists, mathema
ticians and engineers. The state
would be divided into 27 re
gions, with students from 1.400
schools invited to take part.
