Don Larsen, the fifth Giant pitcher, walked Bill White in tentionally and Boyer followed with his game-winning hit. The San Francisco setback made the Dodgers' magic num ber six. That is, any combina tion of Dodger victories and Giant losses totaling six will clinch the pennant for Los An geles. Each club has nine games left. Bob Duliba, who worked a scoreless ninth, was the win ning pitcher as the Cardinals ended an eight-game losing golfing companion of Patton at the Augusta National Club, joins the gallery. Each semifinalist scored two victories Thursday over the de manding 7,051-yard No. 2 course at the Pinehurst Country Club. Patton, a Morganton, N.C, lumber broker and three-time Walker Cup player, had the shortest route to the semifinals, winning his six matches in 92 holes while shooting 12 over par golf. Harris, 20, an Oklahoma State student from Stillwater, Okla., has played 103 holes, four of them 2-1 matches, and shot nine over par. Coody, a husky 25-year-old Air Force lieutenant from Stam ford, Tex., has played closest to par, four over, in going 94 holes. Gray, 24, an insurance man from Pensacola, Fla., has traveled 104 holes and been 17 over par. Twice he's won on the 18th hole and once had to travel 20. After a 2-1 fifth-round vic tory in which he three times had to come from behind to beat Duke sophomore John Mc Key of Orlando, Fla., Patton went back to his hotel to relax. "No sense giving any of these young fellows any more of an edge than they already have," he said. Never before has Palton ad vanced beyond the fourth round of the championship, and he gave evidence yesterday in his 7-6 quarterfinal romp over Jim Gabrielson of Athens, Ga., that he was getting fired up to meet the occasion. He won four of the last five holes, three with birdies. Harris beat two-time public links champion Dick Sikes on the 21st hole and won three of the first seven back nine holes to put out Homero Blancas, 2-1. He had lost to the University of Houston star in the second round of the NCAA tournament last June. Gray won the 12th and 13th holes to take the lead for the first time from fellow-Floridian Paul Desjardins of Miami Shores, then matched him on the five tense holes that fol lowed to preserve his one-hole edge. Coody, a former Texas high school basketball star, had to sweep the last three holes to win his quarterfinal match from Bill Newcomb of the University of Michigan. Hero Boyer had threatened to become a goat when the Giants broke a 1-1 tie with three runs, two unearned, off starter Ernie Broglio in the sixth inning. With two on, Boyer threw wild on Orlando Cepeda's first sacrifice bunt in two years. Two runs scored with the help of Julian Javier's late throw home. Tom Haller's sacrifice fly brought in the third run. The Cardinals bounced back with two runs in the seventh. Starter Jack Sanford, who al lowed only four hits but walked five and hit one batter, began the seventh by yielding a single to Julio Gotay and walking pinch-hitter Red Schoendienst. Javier popped up but Flood walked. With a 3-2 count on Musial, southpaw Billy Pierce replaced Sanford and Musial walked, forcing in a run. After White popped out, Bob Bonn relieved Pierce and Chuck Hiller muffed Boyer's grounder to let in another run. Nicklaus, winner of the $50, 000 World Series of Golf the week before the Seattle Open, fired an eight-undcr par 64 Thursday to lead Lema by one stroke. At 66 were three-time Portland Open champion Billy Casper Jr. and Bob Rosburg. Some 80 players found par an easy touch on the par 36-36 72 Columbia-Edgewater course. The field will be cut to the low 70 and tics after Friday's round. Nicklaus scored six birdies in a row from the seventh through 12th holes and had a total of eight birdies rounds of 31 and 33. He birdied all four par-5 holes, reaching the green in two strokes each time. Lema, who made a strong closing finish at Seattle, holed a 140-yard iron shot for an eagle two on the third hole and had birdie putts of 12 and 15 feet to highlight a 33-32 round. Casper said his putting was off, but he still managed a 32-34 to stay in strong contention for his fourth straight victor at Portland. Rosburg matched Nicklaus for the day's best nine-hole score with a closing 31 after starting with a 35. A huge gallery followed Nick laus and Casper, who were paired with Australian Bruce Crampton. Only a few fans fol lowed the other threesome as more than 100 professionals and amateurs played in cool, cloudy weather. When the winds picked up they regained some of the precious water, but they were never really in the race again. For a time, it appeared to be a question of whether the American boat could finish the 24 miles under the six-hour time limit if it had failed it would have been "no race" but the freshened wind brought her home with more than an hour to spare.
