It was given to honor the electrical engineer who in stalled the first incandescent lights in any opera house in the world. The donation by the Charles and Rosanna Batchelor Memo rial Inc. was in the memory of Charles Batchelor, who in 1881 lighted the grand foyer of 1' Opera of Paris with Thomas Edison's electric light bulbs. The grant was the first re ceived since the center started its $28.6 million completion drive last week. House Damaged . By $1,000 Fire Fire of undetermined origin caused an estimated $1,000 dam age to an unoccupied house at 145 River Loop 2, north of Eu gene Sunday afternoon. Santa Clara Fire District fire men went to the scene 3:55 day light and remained 30 minutes, according to Fire Chief Jack Lamb. Lamb estimated damage at $750 to the building, $250 to contents. Owner of the house Cecil Hodgei of 859 Jefferson St., Eugene carried no insur ance on the property, the chief said. It was a dull day from beginning to end. Volume for the day was esti mated at 2.3 million shares com pared with 2.49 million Friday. Losses of fractions to a point or so were the general rule for most key stocks. A few posted slight gains. Jones & Laughlin was off about a point while Bethlehem, U. S. Steel and Republic traded fractionally lower. Tobaccos backed away more sharply. Liggett & Myers and American Tobacco each de clined more than a point, Loril lard was about a point lower. Cutting earlier losses, Du Pont was off about a point in late dealings and AT&T a frac tion. IBM was off a couple of points, shading an early loss. Polaroid was down about 2 and Litton Industries more than a point. Moderate gains were posted for Chrysler, Goodrich, U. S. Rubber, Kennecott, Eastman Kodak, Texaco, Illinois Central, Johns-Manville and Merck. Prices on the American Stock Exchange declined after an early rise. Trading was quiet. U. S. government bonds de clined; corporates were higher. Cosmonaut Opens Visit TOKYO (in Soviet cosmonaut Yuri A. Gagarin said Monday Soviet space research "is devel oping rapidly and a trip to the Moon may come about sooner than expected, possibly within five years from now." The 28-year-old Soviet major. the first human space traveler, made this statement in an air port press conference shortly after arriving for a nine-day private visit to Japan. Gagarin was greeted by about 2,300 flag-waving leftists at To kyo International Airport and a handful of rightists who shouted over loudspeakers "Gagarin go home!"
