Saturday, May IS, 1961 Register-Guard, Eugene, Oregon Programs, Banquet To Honor Mothers Mother's Day, which is this Sunday, will be observed by a number of churches and church organizations witn special pro grams. . In Eugene, two mother-daugh-ter programs are planned. Emerald Baptist Church will hold its annual Mother-Daughter Banquet Tuesday at 6:15 p.m. at the Church of God, 23rd Avenue and Friendly Street, Eugene. The theme, "A Bouquet for Mother, will be carried out in decorations and program with Mrs. Leo Deffenbacher in charge, . Special recognition will be giv en, to the oldest and youngest mothers present, and also to Mrs. A. C. Osterholm, Mrs. Robert Schmieding and Marilyn Schmied ing, three generations of mothers and daughters. Mrs. Mcrvin Loc won will be banquet speaker. DESSERT PLANNED Women of United Lutheran Eugene, will hold a mother daughter dessert and program Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the church's fellowship hall. Don Hunter of Eugene will show films, and res ervations may be made by calling Betty Pietka, DI 5-5B33, or Ruth Lettenmaier, DI 3-3101. ' Three programs are planned Sunday in Florence. The Church of the Nazarene will observe the day with an elec tion of a "mother of the year" by Sunday school pupils. - Parents of Sunday school pupils at St. Paul American Lutheran Church, Florence, have been in vited to attend classes with their children Sunday. GIFT OF BOOK A book entitled "Mother. Chief of Staff," will be given each mother attending the Sunday services at the Assembly of God, Florence. Children of the Mt. Zion Mis sionary .Baptist Church, Dexter, will honor mothers with a mes sage in verse and song Sunday at the 9:45 a.m. Sunday school serv ice. At Noti, a program of readings and musical numbers honoring mothers will be presented at the Sunday school hour at 10 a.m Sunday at the Church of God. Church News Notes PIPE ORGAN numbers by Mrs. Bernice Kovacs, music director at Bible Standard College, Eugene, will be featured at tonight's Eu gene Youth for Christ rally at 7:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Eugene. Ron Coulter, a senior at Northwest Christian College, and "Sid Starr," will also be on the program. The public is invited, BAHAI'S of Eugene will fea ture Marvin Newport of Eugene as speaker at a program Sunday, 4 p.m., at Friendly House, 2445 Kincaid St., Eugene. His topic, "Qualifications for World Citizen ship," will be based on a state ment of the Baha'U'llah, founder of the Bahai World Faith, "The Earth is one country and mankind its citizens." Public is invited. JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES in the Eugene area have heard an nouncements of preliminary plans for the sect s convention July 4-9 in Vancouver, B.C., Canada. The convention is expected to draw tome 20,000. delegates, including members of the Eugene congre gations. ' . SIXTH IN a-series; of Bible lec tures for the public will be given Sunday at 7 p.m. at Kingdom Hall of the Eugene Congregation of , Jehovah's Witnesses, 95 N. Washington St. W.,.W. Fol lowing the lecture, the weekly congregational Bible study will be held on the topic, "Patience and Endurance,", a subject from Watchtower Magazine. , REV. WILLIAM F. Sullivan, pastor of Eugene Church of God, will attend the Sixth World Pen tecostal Conference, meeting in Jerusalem May 19-21. On his trip, he will visit western Europe, and countries in the Near East and Holy Land. Ho is scheduled to re turn to Eugene June 1. G. JEROME Albrecht, pastor of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Eugene, will attend the convention of the Lutheran Syn odical Conference at Wilwaukee, ' Wise, Wednesday through Satur day as a delegate from the Pacific New Congregation Begins Services First services were held last Sunday by the congregation of the newly-organized Asbury Moth odlst Church.' Some 125 persons attended, according to the Rev. E. J. Aschenbrenner, district superintendent. Services are being held at the auditorium of Fairfield School, ; Royal Avenue and Baxter St. The Rev. FLORENCE A - sub-district rally of Youth Fellowship groups was held Friday and Saturday at Camp Lane near Linslaw, accord ing to the Rev. F. Young people from E.U.B. churches in Rose burg, Eugene, Willakcnzie, Swiss home, Florence and Mapleton par ticipated in the annual event. DISTRICT RALLY for Lane County Christian Churches and Churches of Christ was held Fri day and Saturday at the Univer sity Street Church of Christ, Eu gene. DEVOTIONAL books and liter-1 ature from the Church Supply House will be displayed at the May mcoting of Central Lutheran Church Women. Evangelists, Guests Here This Week Several evangelists will begin meetings and a number of guest speakers will present sermons dunng what promises to be a busy week for Emerald Empire churches. Two evangelists are now hold ing services and another will be gin a series Monday.. " Katherine Vicory of Dayton, Ohio, an evangelist who says she had conducted rally and evangel istic meetings throughout the world, is holding a series at 2690 Willamette St., Eugene, nightly at 7:30 with the exception of Monday nights. .. Miss Vicory will include pray ers for tho sick in the talks. The public is invited. The Rev. H. G. McClish, an evangelist from Midvale, Idaho, will begin a series of evangelistic messages Monday at Springfield Church of Christ, 12th and C Streets, Springfield. His talks will continue through May 24, and will begin at 7:30 p.m. Topics will include "Person al Responsibility," "What is Love" and "God's Foolishness." At 7 p.m., before . the main speech, he will teach a class for children of elementary school age. Nursery service will be provided. A number of guest speakers will bo in Emerald Empire pul pits Sunday. Guest speaker for the Unity Church of Eugene, 790 W. Broad way, Eugene, at 11 a.m. Sunday, will be the Rev. Harvey Klapstein, president of Eugene's Bible Standard College, will speak Sun day at the morning service at the Assembly of God, Florence. A choral group from the college will sing. Dr. and Mrs, James McHan of Springfield, will present a musical program tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the multi-purpose room of Harrison School. They are members of the Seventh-day Ad ventist Church, Springfield. , Choir Sets 'Requiem' One of tho few performances in recent years of Verdi's "Re quiem" will be given in Eu gene May 28 by tho choir of First Methodist Church, Eu gene, In tho church sanctuary. The performance, scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m., will fea ture - tho church's two adult choirs, a total of 65 voices. P at) Four Pastors Accept Galls; One Resigns, One Arrives Four Eugene ministers The Rev. Charles Moore, the Rev. Al- way J. Bell, the Rev. James Mead and the Rev. Robert L. Henkel have submitted resignations to their congregations. In addition, the Rev. J. P, Stockett of Cottage Grove Church of the Nazarene, will leave the Emerald Empire in June -for new pastoral duties. And a new minister foe the Church of God, Springfield, has arrived to begin his work here. MOORE RESIGNS The Rev. Charles Moore, who began the organization of Em erald Baptist Church, Eugene, nearly seven years ago and has been serving as pastor as the church grew in size, has accepted a call to tho Grant Park Baptist Church, Portland. ' Vice president of the Oregon Baptist Convention, he has been active in the Central Lane Coun cil of Churches and the Eugene Ministerial Assn. He will end his pastoral duties in Eugene May 21, and the church is expected to name an interim minister soon. A minister who saw his mis sion congregation grow from five or six adults to 100 adults has ac cepted a call from the Bayshore Baptist Church, San Francisco. The minister is the Rev. Alway J. Bell, who has served Immanuel Baptist Chapel for five years. He plans to begin his work in San Francisco on the first Sunday in June. The Rev, Bell was in evan gelistic work before coming to Eugene. Members of the Eugene Unitar ian Church accepted the resig nation of the Rev. James Mead as minister last 1 Sunday at the church's annual meeting. The Rev. Mead has served the congre gation since February, 1957. Future plans, the Rev. Mead said, are indifinite, but he plans to retire from the ministry. The Rev. Robert Henkel, pas tor of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, Eugene, resigned his pas torate Thursday preparatory to his accepting-a call to organize a congregation in Brockville, On tario, Canada. Pastor Henkel organized the church in 1955, and supervised the congregation 4 building pro gram. His new post will be in the Thousand Islands area of the St. Lawrence River. There is no Lu theran church within 30 miles of the area. His last service at Our Saviour's will be June 11. GOING IN JUNE A Cottage Grove minister, the Rev. J. P. Stockett, has resigned his post with the Church of the Nazarene in Cottage Grove to ac cept a call to the Church of the Nazarene in Sierra Madre, Calif, He organized the Cottage Grove Church a year ago, and it now meets in the American Legion Hall.
