Register-Guard, Eugene, Ore. 1 OB Thurs., Oct. 21, 1954 S! 9 X Local People To Participate In Press Meet Prep Students Gather On Campus Five students and one adult from Eugene, plus a student from Lowell, will take part in the 28th annual Oregon High School Press Conference at the University of Oregon Friday and Saturday. They are: Mrs. Ruth Hill Beacon, yearbook advisor, Ben Gaffe, and Laren Ogle, all of Eugene High School; Nancy Mitchell and Dorma Scadding of Willamette High School; Eileen Gottschim of St. Francis High School; and Canla Brooks of Lowell High School. Registration for the two day convention will begin at noon Friday, in Eric W. Allen Hall, the school of journalism. Tours of the new building will follow registration. Geneva Foss, director of publi cations in the Spokane public schools, and Kay Nelson of North Bend High School, will speak to the delegates in separate opening sessions on newspaper and year book operation. Departmental meetings are scheduled to follow, and will be led by journalism school instructors and Oregon newspapermen. Leo Harris, Uni versity of Oregon director of athletics, is scheduled to speak at a social hour Friday afternoon. The annual conference banquet is to be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday in the Erb Memorial Student Union ballroom. Dr. Gordon A. Sabine, school of journalism dean, will be the toastmaster. Jay Eyerman, photographer for LIFE magazine, is to deliver the main address of the evening. The title of his talk is "Life with LIFE." Debates on yearbook produc tion and panel sessions on news paper problems will constitute the morning meeting. The Ore gon Association of Journalism Advisors will hold its annual meeting, also Saturday morning. The sports director of Radio Station KEX in Portland, Robert Blackburn, is scheduled to speak to the delegates on "So you want to be a sportscastcr" during the awards luncheon Saturday. Fol lowing his address will be the presentation of plaques to 1954 Oregon Scholastic Press improve ment contest winners. Students will be the guests of the Oregon Athletic Department at the Ore gon-San Jose State football game Saturday.
