Dale Gilman, fire marshal, said the valve was broken by a. defect or "improper handling," which loosed the gas under pressure over the railroad yard. He said the gas burned and exploded when the fringe of the gas reached a source of friction, which appar ently was a switch lamp in the yards about 200 feet away. Gilman said he examined the faulty valve and found a spring stem had broken and fallen into the gas-filled car. Under pres sure, with the valve inoperative, the safety mechanism blew open and allowed the gas to escape, he said. NORTH MM BE1G Firm Achieves Fume Control Verdict Denies Damage Claims PORTLAND API The president of Reynolds Metals Company said in a statement released here this week that the firm has achieved control of fumes from its alumi num plants at Troutdale, Ore., and Longview, Wash. R. S. Reynolds, Jr., .Richmond Va., made the. announcement shortly after a verdict was re turned in Tacoma Federal Dis trict Court denying claims for damages against the two plants from farmers and property own ers in Clark and Cowlitz counties, Washington. Judge George H. Boldt ruled against the 18 plantiffs and said "the court is fully satisfied that the utility of the defendant's plant operations and their mi portance to the economy and se curity of the nation far outweigh injury to plaintiffs shown by the evidence. Neither a finding of nuisance nor granting of relief is justified. The plaintiffs had asked $875, 000 for damages to crops and farm animals and for deprecia tion and property damage. They also sought an injunction against further operations of the two plants until control was achieved. C. Kenneth Warrens, executive consultant to Reynolds, said in Portland the control project had cost $4,713,931 for the two plants and required years of effort by top scientists and enginers.
