Newspaper Men Receiving Better Training, Dean Says The men and women who manu facture the nation's newspapers are better prepared now than they have ever been to bring their services to the public, Dr. Gordon A. Sabine, dean of the University of Oregon Journalism School, told members of the Eu gene Rotary Club Tuesday. Sabine, speaking in observation of National Newspaper Week, told of the "human side of the news paper business." SOLID BACKGROUND He used the University of Ore gon journalism school as an ex ample of how students are trained for newspaper work. The dean said present-day methods for teaching journalism call for a "broad, liberal" back ground in education. The stu dent, he added, must know what is significant in the world today to become a good journalist. Sabine said that only 18 per cent of college training for jour nalism majors is in the actual techniques of the profession. The remainder is education in the social sciences, literature and other phases. EXCEPTIONAL RECRUITS Demands on "le newspaper men and women of today, according to the dean, require above-average persons. The students in journalism, therefore, are ex pected to work at their capacity. But even with many outside courses offered for the journalism major, the dean said, the stu dents would be "short-changed" if the university didn't offer "hard-hitting" professional cours es in the techniques of journalism. At Oregon, according to Sabine, there are 180 years of profession al journalism experience repre sented by the present faculty of the journalism school. This experience, along with a new building, has brought a 33 per cent increase in enrollment this year, the dean added. Sabine concluded that through its facilities, the journalism de partment is offering its services to all of Oregon. This will be brought nearer home for each area, he said, as graduates take their training to various newspapers. REGISTER-GUARD WANT 5S BRING RESULTS Register-Guard, Eugene, Ore.
