Y., demonstrates the winning symbol of the $1,800 contest he started among West Germans for a symbol that will mean "hope" to people enslaved by the Com munists. About 20 per cent of the entries came from the Soviet zone, with entrants using West German re turn addresses. The winning symbol, selected from 2,500 entries, js a simple drawing that transforms the Soviet emblem into the Christian cross in two sketches. The. first shows the sickle flattening itself out in a straight line and the hammer becoming the crossbar. The second drawing shows the completed cross. It was submitted by a German whose initials are "H.J.S." but Salmini said he would have to find out if he wanted his name used. Many specified that their names were not to be disclosed. The research is concerned with what parts of the brain are involved in an attack situation and how the brain communicates with other parts of the body to set up defenso networks. Four main stations in the communications system have been identified as important in setting up body defenses. They are the sensory nerves, which focus an injury or discaso in the body: the brain, the pituitary gland and the adrenal system. The key organ in the brain which organizes the body de fense has been identified as the hypothalamus- gland, linked to the other stations by nerve fibre circuits and vascular channels. When an injury occurs. doctors say, the sensory nerves alert the brain, which stimulates the pituitary gland to send out hormones. The hormones, in turn, stim ulate the adrenal glands to emit substances which aid the body in defense against injury and disease. Farm Female DANVERS, Mass.
