The defeat killed the Saints' hopes of gaining a tie with the Bulldogs, who will meet Junction City third in the District 61 loop Additional Sports Page 5 for a fourth berth in the district tournament in March. Eugene, Springfield and Oakridge already have reached the tourney. In the other game of the league's final action, host Pleasant Hill de feated Elmira, 59-49. Oakridge 74, Saints 62 St. Francis, after trailing through out the contest, climbed to within four points of the Warriors, at 62- 58, midway in the fourth quarter but Center Paul Tuchardt poured in nine straight points to assure victory for Coach Lee Keedcr's lads. The victory was the eighth with out a loss for Oakridge in league competition, the 13lh in a row, and the 19th in 21 starts. Oakridge, with Tuchardt, Guard Bunky Beard, and Forward Allic Clark leading the attack, rolled to a 23-11 lead after the first quarter and owned a comfortable 43-30 margin at halftime. Center Larry Walsh, along with guards Fred Cerkeney and Jerome Poissant, paced a St. Francis comeback in the third period as the Saints closed Ihc gap to 51-44 at the start of the final session. St. Francis continued to whittle Ihc deficit until that four-point def icit when Tuchardt settled the issue. Tuchardt collected 20 points while Beard led all scoring with 22 and Walsh netted 15 for the Sainls. Jim Hancy collected 25 in leading Oak ridge to a 42-41 jayvee overtime victory. It was the Cougars' first victory since they downed the Beavers in Corvallis Jan. 6. Oregon State, failing to take ad vantage of its greater height, nevertheless dominated the first half. But Washington State surged ahead early in the third period on a pair of field goals by forward Bob Swanson and another by high point man Pete Mullins. UCLA's Bruins also stayed in the race as they defeated Stanford, 75-50, at Los Angeles for their third victory in a row over their northern rivals. USC 68, Bears 66 California led most of the game but yielded in the final four min utes, chiefly on fouls which gave the Trojans the advantage from the frccthrow line. The Trojans sank seven of them. He broke an Oakland stall with three min utes to go and added six points be fore the final gun. Oakland, leading by 29-28, began its stall early in the period and kept possession until Swcaringcn stole the ball and dashed down court for a lay-in. He added two freethrows to give Drain a 32-29 margin but Dale Marshall countered with a fielder for Oakland. Drain's Dick Joslyn and Oak land's Gary Blaylock traded a field er apiece before Swcaringcn hit again from the field for the final margin.
