Fi nals of the contest were held Sat' urday at the I.O.O.F. Hall in Eugene. Mary Ann U the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Ziniker, of Creswell. Along with students in other Lane County schools she , entered the contest about a month (go by writing an essay on the topic "The Objects ana purposes of the United Nations." 6chool and community activities were also a basis in judging the winners. The five finalists gave short talks on "Why I Would Like to Yisit the United Nations," be fore the Odd Fellows Saturday, as a final event in the contest. Other winners were: 4th place Keba Smallwood, of Lorane, and Janice Rindahl, of Springfield; 3rd place Buby StogsdiU, of 1 mira; 2nd place David Moursund, of University High. These win ners all received books. Judges were Dr. Wesley Nichol son, pastor of the First Congrega tional Church of Eugene; Dr. Dean Lobiugb, assistant superintendent of Eugene 6chools; and Dr. Fred' erick M. Hunter, ex-chancellor of the Oregon State System of High' er Education. Thirteen other Oregon winners will also make the trip to New York under sponsorship of the Odd Fellow Lodge and its branches. They will go in' July. A Jaunt into Canada and a visit to Niagara Falls are also planned. Odd Fellow and Rebekah mem bers will accompany the students. NEWS OF BAKERS, NOW AT KERNVILLE BELLFOUNTAIN Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Malcom and family motored to Kernville Easter weekend for an overnight visit with Mr. and Mrs. Robert Baker and family. The Bakers resided in this com munity for a number of years be fore trading their property here to Mr. and Mrs. Noble Turner for a motor court and service station at Kernville. Airport Zoning Board Asked County Asked To Consider Matter The possibility that the Lane County Court might establish county airport roning board was discussed at a meeting between court officials and Springfield city officials Tuesday. MAYOR B. P. LARSON, Coun cilman Ed Reiersgaard, and City Manager L. B. Bartlett asked the Court to investigate the feasibility for setting up such a board. The Springfield officials took the ac tion following recommendation of the Oregon State Board of Aero nautics that such a body be established. Under tentative plans, the coun cils of Eugene and Springfield would appoint members to the board, and the Court would do likewise. The members would aid in controlling air zones around county airports to protect flight paths. County commissioners and Judge Day T. Bayly agreed to study the proposal further and to work with Eugene and Spring field officials in the matter. The Springfield group also- asked the court to relinquish their part of a right of way that would clear the way for paving I St. from 19th to 21st Sts. The proposed road would open a new route to Maple School. 7 y&&g&M fNfl ZANY COMEDY marks the plot of the Academy Award winning play, "You Can't Take It With You," to be pre sented at University High School April 18, at 8 p.m., and produced by the Scarlet Masque Drama Club. Typical of the crazy antics is this scene, with Essie, the ballet dancer (Silver Sparks) rehearsing in the Vandcrhof living room, while Granpa Vanderhof (Chuck Adams) reads the paper, Boris (Bruce Holt) directs Essie's dance, and Bheba, the maid, (Angie Muhr), Penelope (Marita Newton), Donald, the maid's boy friend (Bobbie Hixon), and Alice (Joan Wbitworth) look on from the side. The show will be pre sented in the school auditorium. COMMISSIONERS asked that action be deferred until receipt of a letter from Springfield School Board stating the Board's wishes In the matter. Play Ball WESTFIR The first cal for boys' softball brought more than 40 boys out to a meeting in West fir Tuesday evening. Rey. Donald Douris, the chairman for "Pee Wee" softball setup, arranged the boys into four teams, with mem bers ranging in age from 8 to 14. Teams will include the Westfir Juniors, aged 8- to 9, with blue suits; the Westfir Ponies, aged 10 to 11, with green suits; the West fir Aces, aged 12 to 13, with red suits; and the Westfir American Legion Junior team, aged 14 and above, with blue and gold suits. William Foust will coach the Aces, and Richard Sherow the Le gion team. Coaches are still being sought for the other teams. Boys interested in playing, and adults interested in helping with the Pee Wee teams, are asked to contact Douris. Games will be sought with teams in ,Oakridge and other nearby towns. First practices will be held the week after Easter. Lowell P-TA Buys Players For School LOWELL Parent-Teacher Assn., cleared $641.57 on the car nival last week. Most of the pro ceeds will be spent for five record players for the school that will play all sizes of records. They will also give four half scholarships to 4-H boys and girls, as reported at the monthly business meeting Friday evening. Mrs. Mayer's seventh grade room won the prize for the most parents in attendance at the Friday meeting. Cub Scouts netted $48 at their country store booth at the carni val. The money will be retained in full by the Cubs for their program. Wins Fellowship An Atomic Energy Commission fellowship has been granted to Ross Floyd, a graduate student in physics in the University of Ore gon and a candidate for a Masters degree. Floyd will receive his fel lowship in radiological physics at Oak Ridge, Tenn., from 'the In stitute of Nuclear Studies.
