Two Sutherlin Officials Quit SUTHERLIN The city re ceived resignations this week from City Recorder Geraldine Wilson and City Engineer Fred Dow. The recorder s resignation will become effective Jan. 1, 1952. She explained she planned to keep books for her husband's service station business and to spend more time in her home. Dow, who has been employed as city en gineer for approximately three years, gave no reason for the ac tion. The two resignations are ex pected to be acted upon at the Dec. 17 council meeting. Mrs, Thomson typed the words of the carols on thin paper, then rubber-cemented them carefully to the faces of Christmas cards, mounted the whole on a card that would fit a projector, and flashed them on a screen for the singing. (IP) Range riding is more than just watch ing the doggies: Frank Hendren killed 665 rattlesnakes in six days while at work for a livestock company. He found them gathering in a ' basin, piled in bunches of 18 to 20 getting ready to den up lor the winter. Hendred used a one by four board about five feet long to toss them away from their holes. Then he clubbed them to death. He notched the board to keep count. (U.R) A hunter had to call on police to kill a dead" hawk he had bagged. The hunter was bringing the hawk home in his car when it sud denly came to life. The man and the hawk battled and the bird finally was shoved put the car window. The hunter called the police. Officers Paul McLoughlin and Don Voigt found the wounded bird In an alley and permanently sub dued it with their nightsticks. On Dec. 21 and 22, a special holiday train will travel from Portland to San Francisco, leav ing Portland In the afternoon. The train will also run on Dec. 28, for the East-West football game. Also, an extra car has been added to the Shasta Daylight streamliner for the duration of holiday travel. Driver Makes Lucky Escape MINOT, N. D. P) A motor ist, Ray Etzler, pinned beneath his overturned truck, jacked up and freed himself all by his lonesome. The Butte, N. D., man was driv ing with his wife and small daughter when the truck over- turned on a slippery road. Etzler was thrown from tho machine and pinned under the overturned truck. Etzler managed to get a hand free and reached the jack "carried In the truck. With his one free hand, he carefully jacked the ma chine off his body high enough to allow him to escape. Public Market Two Men Face Drunk Charges Harvey Matt Johnson, 53, gen. eral delivery, Cottage Grove, was charged with driving while under the influence of intoxicating liquor Wednesday evening and placed in the Eugene city jail. Earl Edward Clairmont, 47, of Ronan, Mont., also went to jail on a charge of being drunk In a car. He was picked up with Johnson at 5:50 p.m. after police observed a car moving through the '6th and High St. intersection against traf fic lights.
