SUTHERLIN The city re
ceived resignations this week from
City Recorder Geraldine Wilson
and City Engineer Fred Dow.
The recorder s resignation will
become effective Jan. 1, 1952. She
explained she planned to keep
books for her husband's service
station business and to spend
more time in her home. Dow, who
has been employed as city en
gineer for approximately three
years, gave no reason for the ac
tion. The two resignations are ex
pected to be acted upon at the
Dec. 17 council meeting.

prise novelty of the McKenzie
Club s recent Christmas party was
an original "invention" of Mrs.
Dayton Thomson's that turned out
to be the hit of the evening.
Mrs, Thomson typed the words
of the carols on thin paper, then
rubber-cemented them carefully
to the faces of Christmas cards,
mounted the whole on a card that
would fit a projector, and flashed
them on a screen for the singing.
Members were surprised to see
some of their personalized last
year's cards.

be recovering nicely in Corvallis
after a recent operation for a rup
tured oppendix. Latest reports
give hopes of a speedy recovery.

ing the doggies: Frank Hendren
killed 665 rattlesnakes in six days
while at work for a livestock
company.
He found them gathering in a
' basin, piled in bunches of 18 to
20 getting ready to den up lor
the winter. Hendred used a one
by four board about five feet long
to toss them away from their
holes. Then he clubbed them to
death. He notched the board to
keep count.

had to call on police to kill a
dead" hawk he had bagged.
The hunter was bringing the
hawk home in his car when it sud
denly came to life. The man and
the hawk battled and the bird
finally was shoved put the car
window. The hunter called the
police.
Officers Paul McLoughlin and
Don Voigt found the wounded bird
In an alley and permanently sub
dued it with their nightsticks.
HONORING THE 4-H CLXS This green, three-ccnt
stamp, honoring the 4-H Club movement, will go on snle
at Springfield, O., on Jan. 15. Springfield claims to be the
birthplace of the youth farm movement. The design fea
tures a group of farm buildings, at left, and a teen-age
boy and girl facing the club symbol of a four-leaf clover.
It bears the four H's, which stand for Head, Heart, Hands
and Health.

Holiday travel has necessitated
several moves by the Southern
Pacific Co., spokesmen reported
Thursday.
On Dec. 21 and 22, a special
holiday train will travel from
Portland to San Francisco, leav
ing Portland In the afternoon. The
train will also run on Dec. 28, for
the East-West football game.
Also, an extra car has been
added to the Shasta Daylight
streamliner for the duration of
holiday travel.
The SP reported that much of
the travel increase was due to
Christmas furloughs for the armed
forces and that everything pos
I sible is being done to give handl
ing to the troops.

overturned truck, jacked up and
freed himself all by his lonesome.
The Butte, N. D., man was driv
ing with his wife and small
daughter when the truck over-
turned on a slippery road. Etzler
was thrown from tho machine and
pinned under the overturned
truck.
Etzler managed to get a hand
free and reached the jack "carried
In the truck. With his one free
hand, he carefully jacked the ma
chine off his body high enough
to allow him to escape. He then
freed his wife and daughter.

Harvey Matt Johnson, 53, gen.
eral delivery, Cottage Grove, was
charged with driving while under
the influence of intoxicating liquor
Wednesday evening and placed in
the Eugene city jail.
Earl Edward Clairmont, 47, of
Ronan, Mont., also went to jail on
a charge of being drunk In a car.
He was picked up with Johnson at
5:50 p.m. after police observed a
car moving through the '6th and
High St. intersection against traf
fic lights.
The car in which the men were
riding contained several empty
bottles of beer and a partly con
sumed bottle of wine.

There has been a great deal of
illness lately. The James Suiter
family have been having three
day measles for the past two
weeks.
Nearly all the members of the
Lynn Wyman family have been
ill recently but are all improving1
now.
Mrs. C. S. Enz has returned to
her home In Corvallis after spend
ing more than a week here caring
for her daughtor Mrs. C, R. Simon
who has been ill.
; Mrs. Houston Green has been
confined to bed for more than two
weeks. Her condition shows very
little improvement.
