McCune Home Burns SHEDD (P) The McCune home, a landmark residence six miles west of here, was destroyed by fire early Saturday. Amelia McCune was seriously burned. Phone SpfW. 2115 Coburg Has Women's Class In Upholstering COBURG Thera will be a meeting Tuesday, 2:30 p.m., in the school lunch room for all women of the Coburg area who are inter ested in upholstering classes, which are to be sponsored by the State Board of Education Divi sion of Vocational Education through the Coburg School, Dis trict 43. Mrs. Mae Frye, of Eugene, will be the instructor. A tentative date for starting the classes is set for Friday, March 18. Anyone who is unable to meet with the women Tuesday, may re ceive information concerning the classes by telephoning Mrs. Charles W. Swango, 7098-J-l. Coburg Odd Fellows will confer the first degree on Raymond Briggs, Tuesday, 8 p.m., at the lodge session. The initiatory de gree was conferred at the last meeting. City Briefs The Men's Club of St. Mary's Episcopal Church will hear Dr. Paul Dull at the monthly meeting Monday at 7 p.m. in parish house. Dr. Dull is professor of political science and history at the Univer sity of Oregon. His subject will be "The Present International Situation in the Far East." A Children's Hospital School benefit dance will be held Satur day, April 2, from 9 to 12 p.m. at the Masonic Temple. Chester Pietka's accordian orchestra will furnish the music for the Sons of Norway sponsored affair. Admis sion is $1. Guest editor for the April issue of the Journal of the American institute of Architects will be Sidney W. Little, dean of h school of architecture and allied arts at the University of Oregon. Dean Little, who is the eighth guest editor for the professional architectural monthly publication, will write an editorial for the issue. It will concern transition from student to professional status. Bailey Hill Modernizes With Fine New School Addition rtegrstPT-GTiaTfl, Kngene, Ore., Stm., March 13, 1949 , Page J BAILEY HILL Bailey Hill community can look forward to a 12-room school within ten years according to Clarence Hines, Sup erintendent of Public Schools of District four, who spoke before the recent Bailey Hill Parent-Teacher meeting. Immediate construction will be gin on three additional class rooms, a 63 foot multi-purpose room, kit chen and heating plant, all facing west. Facing east in the Immediate building program will be the outer office, principal's office, book stor age room, nurses room, and first aid room. The addition will be frame construction, no basement, con crete floors and will have many windows. Five acres of land along Four Oaks Grange Road adjacent to the school property has been pur chased. An unique feature of the mul tipurpose room, which Is the ac tivity room and dining room, is that the tables and benches are concealed in the walls and are pulled out when needed. The benches pull out independent of the tables. The addition will give the school six class rooms, and it will be ready for the fall term. The pres ent lunch room Is to be a visual aid room. Grade school pupils of Oak Hill now attending Stella Magladry will attend Bailey Hill until the population of that area justifies a new school. Mr. Hines complimented the school on the fact that a picture of the first and second grades was chosen for the front cover of the Annual School Report for 1947-48. Miss Grace Robertson, school nurse also complimented the school on having a Parent-Teacher Association transportation sys tem whereby mothers without transportation are brought to school to consult the nurse. Miss Robertson also praised the school on having clean-up kits containing tooth brush, soap and comb, to help the children keep clean at school. Mrs. W. Bowser of Oak Hill, Mrs. Herbert Merker and Mrs. Al bert Sirks of Bailey Hill are on the nominating committee. A money-raising event is being planned for the latter part of April which will include travel pictures and folk dancing. Attendance Up At Willamalane SPRINGFIEL& -Willamalane Park and Recreation District at tendance figures have been in creasing steadily and a still sharp er rise is predicted for the coming months. Mrs. Irene Squires, dis trict superintendent, announced Saturday. Mrs. Squires said participation in the program was at present greater man it had ever been. She estimates that more than 1000 persons a week take part in some program activity. The superintendent said student participation had increased consi derably in the past few weeks and that additional district activities could be included in the general recreational program now that the school grounds have been opened after school hours. The money was allotted the six number air forces of the country for reserve training pay for the first three months of 1949. Lt. Col. Jackson W. Lewis, commanding officer 284th Air Re serve Training; Center at McChord AFB, Washington, said the amount earmarked for this area is equal to that already approved for the last three months of this year. DeMers, Mrs. Paul Prltchard, Mrs Carl Peter sen, Mrs. Melson and Mrs. Mike Bollnger. 2 Go to Trial Tuesday In Park Scuffle Case Paul Judd and Frank Budrow, both of Portland, who are accus ed of assault and battery, will be tried In district court Tuesday morning. The two were held after a fight on Jan. 17 in the city park blocks with Joe Cullender, merchant patrolman. Judd was shot in the shoulder and Budrow received facial and head lacerations in a scuffle with Cullender in front of the county jaiL Cullender was attempting to jail the two men. Both men, who have entered pleas of not guilty, were hospit alized after the incident, Judd for several weeks. Budrow also faces disorderly conduct charges to which he has pleaded not guilty. Jobs Hard to Find WASHINGTON (JP) If you are the average man looking for a job it will probably take you about eight and a half weeks to find one and maybe longer. Tha Census Bureau said Satur day that was the average time It took to find work last month. This compared with 1 weeks in January. Men were facing the bleakest aspect all the way around, in both unemployment and in time re quired to find new jobs. It was taking them an average of nine weeks to find a jo'b arjainst an average of weeks for wom en, the bureau said. The unemployed total rose to a postwar peak of 3,221,000 last month.
