Only $5 down. 10-Year Cuarantee 033313 Woman Sues Doctors Alleging Negligence A $30,000 suit for damages was filed in the county courthouse Saturday by Paula Milne alleging "negligence" in the performance of an abdominal operation by two local doctors. Defendants named are Drs. Wil liam H. Chapman and H. E. Lamb who, the plaintiff claims, per formed and abdominal operation on her in a local hospital in Aug., 1948, and left a hemostat within her abdomen which was later re moved in a second operation in June, 1948. The plaintiff alleges permanent scarring and injury and extreme pain during the period between the two operations. The amount asked is for general damages. (Story on Page 1) KEEPING AREAS of Eugene's fast-Increasing de mands for electric power, the Eugene Water Board and the Bonneville Power Administration will put new facilities In use Sunday to augment the local delivery of federal power. The huge transformers shown at right above will be put in operation to re place the smaller units seen at left. More than trebling the capacity of the BPA's Eugene substation, these transformers will permit delivery approximately 20,000 kilowatts of electrical energy from the federal power system. One hour's wages for a brick layer, a carpenter, an electrician, a painter, plasterer, plumber and a building laborer would to tal $14.60 in Eugene. It would cost $18,873 in Newark, N.J., however, and a low of $11.40 in Charlotte, N.C. Phoenix Highest According to a Department of Labor survey, the labor cost of building a home in a far western city is highest at Phoenix and low est at Salt Lake City. The survey, made as of July 1, covered seven selected building trades in 75 cit ies. It showed far western labor costs were about midway between the highest and lowest for the country. Wage scales for the seven crafts men in Eugene are: bricklayers, $2.50; carpenters, $1.95; electri cians, $2; painters, $1.87; plast erers, $2.50; plumbers, $2.25; and building laborers, $1.52. Other western cities covered by the report ranked In this order af ter Phoenix: San Francisco, $15,398 for one hour of work by the seven tradesmen; Seattle, $15.29; Los Angeles $15,163; Portland, $14. 55; Spokane$14.55; Denver, $14. 41; and Salt Lake City, $13.35. The survey showed the highest hourly wage for bricklayers in the West was $3 at Phoenix and the lowest $2.25 at Spokane and Salt Lake. This compared with the na tional high of $3.20 at New York and the low of $1.75- at Charles ton, S.C. Similar information for the oth er trades surveyed included: Carpenters High of $2.16 at San Francisco and low of $1,825 at Salt Lake; national high $2.90 at Newark and low $1.50 at Charleston, Charlotte and Port land, Me. Plumbers $2.50 at Los Angeles, Seattle and Spokane,-down to $2 at Salt Lake; national high $3 at New York, low $1.75 at York, Pa. Building laborers $1,665 at Seattle 'down to $1,275 at Salt Lake; national high $2.25 at New- ark, low 75 cents at Charleston and Jacksonville, Fla. Cost of hiring the seven trades men in Portland was $14.55, a nickel cheaper than in Eugene.
